Forum lurking at 3am.

Just after some advice... cold morning on thursday - well.. for us (9deg).

Started the B4 and noticed that it puffed some smoke (exhaust side mirror). It cleared fairly quickly, got out and looked while it idled. No smoke to be seen? I then had my mate follow me that afternoon - he didn't see anything worth noting apparently. Checked the oil, its still around full. 1400km's since last change, 5w30 castrol edge - which was a noob move when I did change it, but now that its winter... not so bad right?

Hoping it was nothing major (turbo seal, hg... or terminal). I let it sit for 20-30sec before driving or turning it off. Didn't seem to do it today when I took it for a quick run. I am probably just paranoid.

Its thicker and fuller than steam isn't it? I know exactly what's happened :-)

Cause it happened to me a lot worse than that..

Did you drive the car a little hard a couple hours before and then not cool it down properly? Supposedly the b4 was notorious for a few drops of oil getting past the seals and making their way into the exhaust side of the turbo.. this is what gives you that quick burst of smoke on startup.

Nothing to worry about, my b4 covered my whole street when I started it that one time

Sounds like steam to me chief. Mine does that every morning.

Yeah I get smoke puffs sometimes, but it's random just assumed it was a bit of a leak from a hard drive.

Your car has a hard drive?
Do you use that to store mp3s?

Because LEDs draw less current, so the alternator doesn't need to work as hard which means the motor doesn't have as much strain, which means less pressure on the seals so oil won't leak.

I was thinking more along the lines of installing them into the exhaust, to illuminate the smoke coming out, that way, you can distinguish what problems you have much more easily.


Naturally, the more LEDs in your exhaust, the more light it'll emit, and much easier it'd be to see the smoke coming out.

Engine produces warm emissions.
It was 9deg outside.

Same as when you're out on a cold night and you can see your breath when you breathe out

Hey guys, I got the old man to start it this morning, it did it a little bit... but yeah I am thinking I just need to remember to let it run long enough before and after a hard drive.

Car still runs fine, plenty of boost, and its not chewing through fluids that I know of. I think it was just a bit of oil getting past the seals, sitting there overnight then burning off with added steam in the morning.

I youtube'd blown turbo and its certainly not that bad!

This video is close to what it does. Even the clearing under rev and thickening after. Not as thick though, however it did seem like that on thursday. It had been sitting for a week at that point, had no need to drive it into town.

Have noticed it is certainly not a car that likes sitting around. Gotta take her for a spin at least once a week.

Haha, my mates WRX did, smoke everywhere! It fixed his rough idle. Also it just needed a new clutch and a knock sensor, running perfectly now.
