Hey guys,

I had to leave my car at Maroubra tonight as it failed to start again when I wanted to leave. First few turns it cranked over, ran for about 2 seconds and died again. Tried for a few hours trying to get it working and can only narrow it down to the fuel pump carking it. Petrol is in the tank, even went and got a jerry can from the servo and filled her up. Got under the car, tried knocking the fuel tank with a hammer to see if I could do anything - no luck. Poured a few drops of petrol down the throttle body, and viola, car started again for a few seconds and then died.

Going to get the car towed to my mechanic tomorrow.. and hopefully sort the problem out on Monday.. Final guess being a 'ed fuel pump?

Any tips/suggestions/maybes appreciated.

Got under the car, tried knocking the fuel tank with a hammer to see if I could do anything - no luck.

But honestly I have no idea, it could be the fuel pump? Do you hear it kick in when you turn the ignition? Other than a clogged fuel filter I dunno why it would suddenly start doing that.

Remove your bak seat an you should hear the fuel pump priming. Check your fuses and connections aswell. A multimeter or rear light will make it easier. I'd your fuel pump isn't priming then check you have power at the connection plug. If it's the fuel pump it's a pretty simple fix.

hitting it is not as stupid as it sounds, fuel pump is a DC motor which contains brush gear, giving it a bash can free up the brushes sitting on the commutator and it might start.

however on a car that age i do doubt it

Cheers lads will go check it out this morning before I get it towed.

Knocking the tank actually was a temporary fix on a barina my mate use to own, to get it to the mechanic.

I'll take a wild guess in saying your car has done over 150k? from everything you''re telling us, it sounds like a pump that was on it's way, and now has finally given up.

taking the pump out of the housing is a pain, but getting the housing out of the tank is easy

make sure you have less than half a tank or as little fuel as possible when taking it all out, otherwise it gets messy!

Went back this morning to Maroubra Beach parking lot with tools and my dads work van hahaha. Took the back seats out, took out fuel pump assy.. Took the fuel pump to Repco, got replacement one, put it in at the parking lot, she fired up, all good!!!!

SO much safer to have as much fuel as possible!

Actually it wasn't messy at all. Only dripping petrol from the fuel assy and a couple of rags covered that!

Not uncommon to get a fuel pump to run by banging the tank.
