I recently bought a 2nd hand ej206 to replace the slowly dying one in my car.
We did the motor swap, hooked it all up and started it up. It started easily and settled into a smooth idle. But whenever we blipped the throttle an ungodly amount of smoke would poor out the back. We took it for a short drive around the paddock, but it was clear something was very wrong, it wouldn't make even 0.5psi of boost and the smoke out the back was unbelieveable.
After about 5-10min total running time it had burned about a litre of oil!
So after much swearing and cursing the person I got the motor from, we started to pull the engine back out.

I pulled the dump pipe off the primary turbo and tipped this out of it:

Looking back into the turbine housing, I could see where it had sheared off the shaft, there was basically a direct path from the oil pressure feed to the rest of the exhaust, no wonder it had used so much oil!

Pulled the rest of the turbo off to inspect the carnage:

Luckily I happened to have a spare vf25, so I changed it over and put the motor back in. It took about 50km of driving to burn off all the oil that had pooled up in the exhaust. It was a pretty spectacular smoke screen behind it.

Just goes to show how honest some people who use these forums are. The guy I got the motor off said the engine was running perfectly when it was last pulled from the car.... yeah right!

Convert to single.

In all seriousness. You have a dead VF25. They're worth $100 tops for a pristine one?

Be thankful it was just that, and nothing worse TBH.

Wow, thats some serious damage. Internet isnt a safe place, i discovered it when i bought my lib, the bolt that holds the brace on the engine was missing and a few other things.

Just gotta take the good with the bad :/

Glad you found the issue and had a solution close by.

yeah I was lucky I had a spare turbo, but I was effing annoyed at having to pull the motor out again! I'm also a bit worried about the general health of this motor too. It doesn't sound too bad, but there is a fair few chunks of compressor missing that must have gone through the engine. Also, how high did they have the boost when it blew? How much detonation has this engine already endured?

A good lesson can be learnt from this experience:

Inspect the turbos before installing second hand motors.

Looks like it was from a blown engine where something had gone through it. On a track wrx of a friend, destroyed a piston and the turbo ended up a little similar to this lol

Ouch. That is a bit shitty, but as Alex said, at least it is a cheap part to replace (you even had a spare :D)
