cam belt came off after accident

On the weekend we are going to see if we can refit the belt and then do a compression test. It doesn't seem to have damaged any of the pulleys, but I won't know for sure until I can get it apart and have a look.
Is there any chance at all that it won't have bent the valves or is it pretty much guaranteed to have done damage?

^^^EJ motors are interference motors. if the motor was running at the time you will be in trouble.
Might have some bent valves and rooted pistons going on...
I would have gone to the kitchen, collected a brown bag, dropped my dacks, pinched off a loaf in said bag, done up dacks, stickytaped bag, placed bag in envelope, and mailed it right to your face for being such a tool.
It's ok, sometimes when we herp, we also derp.

he ran up the back of someone but the car stalled as he hit the brakes with no clutch, the hit made the belt came off but engine wasnt running
if the car ran until the belt came off then it would have stalled because of internal damage

I had a timing belt tensioner explode while i was driving around in my old wagon and shit went everywhere. Car came to a griding halt. Slapped on a new belt and it was apples.
Your mate may be lucky. I reckon it would be quicker to whip the intake/zorst manifold off and have a look that way.

I guess there is an extreme outside chance that the valves would have come to rest in just the perfect positions so they are clear of the pistons, but thats proably just wishful thinking.
Ah well, I guess this crash is gonna cost the guy a lot more than he first realised.

wikipedia says all ej's post 1996 were interference engines
Only early EJ20/22's are non-interference.

you really aren't going to know until you put a belt on and try?

The damage was a lot worse than I first realised. After I took the bumper off I could see the full extent of the damage. Looks like he's hit a towbar or something.

With the cam cover off, you can see the belt has come off the back side of the crank pulley and was completely jammed.

The belt is r/s

I rotated the cam pulleys by hand to a position where both valves should have been closed and ran a compression test. LH bank is fine, RH bank has zero compression on both cyls.
The upside of this for me, is that I am probably going to buy this wreck and use it for a cheap manual conversion for my car. its only got 104,000 k's on it and the dual range box is tight as. Plus theres plenty of good parts i can wreck out to whoever wants them.
