Hi all
Some of you might of seen my post for my new car (still not here yet) but one of the first things i want to do is get a aftermarket shifter (eg hurst B&M etc... ) so ...... does anyone know how the auto is operated in a 03 Liberty? is it just cable or does it use a mechanical linkage. I don't like the dog leg shift pattern of the original shifter.

mate if the only reason you want to do this is because you don't like the shape of the shift pattern, my advise would be don't.
i put one of these on a gen 3 4eat with a manual valve body/shift kit and looking back it was a) a huge waste of money b ) a huge waste of time c) an absolute eyesore
in my opinion you new car is far to nice to mess up with a mod like this. leave it as is or do a proper manual conversion (as i ended up doing). leave the ratchet shifters for muscle cars.
if as you say it's only for cosmetics i'd look at doing something like the gear boot mod Shane did on his RSK which made it "look like" a manual as the shifter and console had a manual gearboot to hide the auto shift pattern

my reasons are not cosmetic, this car will be my toy for track days and drags and the like, I'd rather use a ratchet shifter for drags to prevent missing a gear in the heat of the moment
and if i'm having a bit of a sprint up a hill i use a auto like a manual to hold a gear thru a corner instead of the auto trying to think what to do. not really interested in a manual conversion at this time, maybe later down the track when i add more neddies to the old girl
..... or blow the gbox ........
getting back to my original question..... when you converted yours was it a cable or link setup? just trying to source a compatible shifter. I've found a universal B&M locally which has detent and ratchet modes ..... if it's a cable setup i can make this fit and still look pretty good.

the simple answer is it was cable.
if your planning on dragging or tracking it i would think that the box is not long for this world as it will break, in my mind no question about it.
edit: if you do go ahead with this a transmission cooler is a MUST
the car is auto already with manual gear selection so you can select the gears yourself if your hill climbing (you should only need 1-3rd) and if your taking it to the strip you can do the same or leave it in full auto (and power button in to get a few more rpm).
i'd be lying if i said i wasn't trying to talk you out of it. being that i've been there and done that i honestly feel i can't recommend this modification.
that said, it's your car and your money so if you do decide to go down this path i wish you all the best
