Toggle this category Subaru says it will have a sports-focused SUV on the local market soon.

[Since 2005 Subaru has sold a high performance STi version of the Forester compact soft-roader for the Japanese market.]

Subaru will launch a "sporty SUV" at the Sydney motor show next month, the company's managing director Nick Senior says.

Senior wouldn't reveal any details of the vehicle and refused to be drawn on whether it would be a variant of a current model, but the most likely candidate for a power upgrade would be the company's best-selling Forester compact SUV.

The current Forester already has a range-topping turbocharged version of the Forester, the XT, but that vehicle puts out less power and torque than the WRX sedan and hatch, leaving room for a performance hero in the Forester range.

Senior wouldn't elaborate on any details of the new model, other than to say the Sydney unveiling could be a global launch of the concept.

Subaru has had an STI version of the Forester in the Japanese market, but it is believed the new sports SUV won't wear the STI moniker down under.

The Japanese version, launched in 2005, used the same engine as the Impreza WRX STI, but managed to eke even more power out, producing 240kW. And at the 2008 SEMA aftermarket tuning show in the US, Subaru revealed a Forester XTI that produced similar power to the Japanese car.

At the moment, the most potent Forester puts out 169kW, while the Impreza WRX makes 195kW and the WRX STI develops 221kW.

While Ford has flirted unsuccessfully with a performance SUV and premium brands such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz have go-fast versions of their soft-roaders, a Forester WRX would give Subaru a unique selling proposition in the compact SUV market.

It would also be an opportunity to match the power output of the 200kW V6 version of its main rival, the Toyota RAV4, and surpass the 175kW output of Mazda's turbocharged CX-7.

Senior says turbocharged versions of the Forester already make up 15 to 20 per cent of total sales, which means they regularly outsell the Impreza WRX.

A WRX version would help to cement the Forester's position as the best-selling compact SUV in the country, extending its lead over the RAV4.

Forester sales are up by almost 50 per cent this year, thanks in part to the success of a new diesel engine that now makes up between a quarter and a third of total Forester sales.

In June and July, the Forester averaged roughly 230 sales, well above Subaru's initial volume estimates.
