Tyres are forked on my Gen3 B4. I have 215/40/R18, 7" wide rim (gold CS9's).

Bridgestone has the buy 3 get one free at the moment. So I'm wanting to take advantage of it. I dropped in on Saturday and got some pricing.

They can only do the Potenza RE050A for $330 each fitted in 215/40/R18.

However he was more keen to fit Potenza RE003 for $259, but only available in 225/40/R18. I remember the last time I tried to get tyres for these rims they were trying to get me to use that size because it opens up more tyre options. Has anyone done it before, scrubbing, sidewall profile ok etc?

Personally I would stick with 215.

With the lower 40 profile the extra width has more effect than with the std 45 profile.

The other issue is the increase in diameter. As the std B4 tyre is 215/45-17 your 215/40-18 is closer to std.

I have tried the 215/45-18's off the RB on the wife's GenIII and due to being 25mm greater in diameter, they hit the rear of the front wheel tub.

I saw a pic of a 235/40-18 some bloke jammed on a 7" rim over at .asn. Looks like the thing would roll around like crazy so I suspect a 225 would be somewhere in between.

I run 225/45/17's on my Liberty and they're fine on a gen 2 with no scrubbing. i think +48 offset. Not sure how the clearance differs for gen 3's though.

edit: actually Jai put my old wheels on his Gen 3 GTB and they were fine (but i can't remember the rim offset so not much help sorry??)

Ran it through an online calculator. My cousin had wider tyres on 7" (Mazda 6 MPS) and it looked pretty crap. So I'm undecided at the moment.

Results for your selected Wheel/Tyre 1 215/40/R18
Rolling Radius 314.6mm
Circumference 1976.69mm
Diameter 629.2mm

Results for your selected Wheel/Tyre 2 225/40/R18
Rolling Radius 318.6mm
Circumference 2001.82mm
Diameter 637.2mm

Differences between Wheel/Tyre 1 & 2
Rolling Radius 4mm
Circumference 25.13mm
Diameter 8mm

When the speedo reads 100km/hr it's actually at 101.26 km/hr (however my car has always read about 5km lower at 100).

Update: He got back to me on stock. A month wait on the RE003 and no stock either on the RE050A. Lol. Kuhmo or something in 215/40/R18 maybe... I have Falkens and they've been ok.

A mate of mine has a MY10 WRX and tried a wider tyre (I can't remember what size but i think it was the next size up) and ended up swapping them back to standard after about two weeks.

His complaints were that it dulled the handling and had a tendency to 'tramline' a lot more.

He is a tyre wholesaler and has competed in bitumen and dirt motor-sport since the 1970's so I tend to value his comments. After driving my RB for the first time was 'Nice car but the tyres are shit!'. Not surprising really, it's got Federal Formoza FD2's on it.

Chasing quotes at the moment. This size is harder to find stock. Can just get what I currently have again Falken Ziex. Kuhmo KU39, Pirelli P Zero, Pirelli P Zero Nero and hitting up another place for the RE050A's. That'll do for now lol. And yeah I agree, I'm not waiting a month for stock to find out they don't fit properly. Any other tyre recommendations?

Tricky size I know.

I would not get Pirelli or Falken. The KU39 would be the best bang for buck IMO.

I drove a couple of cars the other day, one with Pirelli P Zero, the other with Michelin Pilot sport. It was noticeable how much better the Michelin's were over the Pirelli's.

Can you get a photo for me? Mine is lowered just a bit too. Worried it'll have a bulging sidewall. Which my cousins tyres did, but maybe he had 235's or something stupid. There is room in my guards.

225/40 will be fine on a 7" rim and definitely no sidewall buldge.

Out of 225 or 215, I would more looking at the better tyre for the better price as both sizes are fine and within legal requirements.

No way you will have fitment / rubbing issues with either spec on your car.

All my quote requests have come back as RE050A's out of stock. RE003's at least a month away in that size.

I can get Kuhmo KU39's 215/40/R18 for $220 each. Pirelli are $315 and $340. Haven't asked about any other brands yet.

But yeah, I am just not sure my current tyres have a month left in them.

225/40 imo is perfect fitment on a 7inch rim. Sits nice and square and acts as a bit of a rim protector.

Here ya go mate, for reference tyres are ADVAN sport something (highly recommend them!)

Also, re the speedo issue, when I changed from 215/45/17 to 225/40/18, my speedo got way more accurate, went from reading ~10km/h under to ~ 1km/h under.

They look a lot more meaty on the rims. If I go the 225's I'll get the RE003's, he has them on backorder, but I have to pay before the 30th to get the deal. I am getting prices for the other options at the moment.

Surely you can pick up some left over re002 stock?
