Make sure the inlet hose to the pump is an absolute tight fit on the pump inlet (hoses go hard with age) and the O rings in the inlet fitting form an airtight seal. These things pull air into the system from there and make for noisy operation.

If the pump gets noisy after a belt tension, the shaft bushing may be worn and the pump is pulling air from the shaft seal. If this is the case, then it's reco time.

+1 for checking the o rings, also check that the high pressure line is torqued to the right spec. I actually thought I needed my pump rebuilt but the leak was fixed with a simple retorque.
