Hey,
I've just had my car in at Subaru for a squeaky sound that I've been hearing. Apparently my power steering pump is on its way out. They've priced it at $1600 genuine plus labour of around $300 or $600 refurbished, plus labour.

Seems really pricey for genuine... Thoughts and suggestions? I'm wondering whether I take it to ab independent mechanic who works on subies??

Thanks!

That's pretty normal for a genuine pump.

p/s pumps, alternators and sensors seem to be quite highly priced..

I like to think of it as borrowing someone's car and driving it better than them.

Those things can be quite easy to rebuild if you have the time.

But I'd just find a second hand one from a wrecker/ebay.

Grab a genuine brand new unit from Partsouq.com at a fraction of the local cost... around $320 USD (pity about the exchange rate though)

Do what I did in April last year when my power steering pump was making whining noises, if you're in Sydney that is.

I managed to find a place in Marrickville called Active Power Steering who do an exchange; you buy a reconditioned power steering pump from them for the one in your car (they take it, recondition and sell it again). And better yet they said if my mechanic had it out by the time they arrived to deliver the pump they would be happy to deliver it at no extra cost.

The power steering pump ended up costing me $364 and ICHIban charged just $77 for labour. $441 for it all may not seem the cheapest but everything inside is new and in good working order.

Thanks for the replies - I'll have to look into all this. Yeah, I'm in Sydney on the Northern Beaches. Appreciate the help!

No worries man. Best thing to do if you go with my option is to give them a call to double-check on pricing and whether they would deliver to the Northern Beaches (I don't see why they wouldn't if they drove to Ingleburn for me). They will answer all of your questions and will give you a run down of the exchange.

So you've already replaced the o-ring and checked that the ps fluid is cherry red, not requiring a flush n refill? If so, proceed, if not proceed to google :)

This.

Plus the feed line to the pump goes hard and can pull air.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?
