A next-generation preview of the Subaru XV crossover will debut at next month’s Geneva motor show, the Japanese car maker has confirmed.

Little else has been revealed about the new concept’s coming, although a shadowy teaser image that accompanied the announcement offers a hint of what we can expect from the show car’s look.

Lighting up just a small corner of the concept, this image reveals that we can look to last year’s Impreza hatch and sedan concepts for a view of what to expect with the new XV concept.

But, unlike the current XV, which is largely a jacked-up Impreza hatch with unique bumpers and cladding, this new concept looks to be a subtly different headlight design in addition to the more obvious changes to the bumper, grille and wheel arches.

Whether this is a hint at a broader styling difference for the next XV – which could instead debut with a more conventional compact SUV design aimed at rivalling models like the Nissan Qashqai and Mitsubishi ASX – remains to be seen.

Importantly, the coming debut of this new XV concept confirms that last year’s Viziv Future concept is more likely a preview of the new Forester rather than – as has been reported elsewhere – the next XV compact SUV.

Expect the XV concept to ride on a wheelbase shared with the Impreza concepts, which means 2670mm footprint – 35mm longer than with the current model, and 24mm longer than the Qashqai’s base.

Watch for more on the XV concept to surface in the weeks ahead.

So long as XV maintains its position as owner of the ugliest stock rims in Subaru AU showrooms.

The actual wheel design isn't too bad. It's the colour scheme which is horrible.

Here's some painted:

Really I was going to say the rims look better than the previous model haha.

Those side mirrors are terrible.
