So looking around for oil to put in my EJ208.

I've been using Delvac MX 15w-40 when I can find it -- and thinking of getting a big tub from the distributor, but came across STP semi-syn diesel on the Supercrap website,

Reasonable price for the specs.

15W-40 API CJ-4/SM only $70/10l

I wonder who makes it?

(CJ-4/SM is on par with mobil's Delvac MX ESP, which is a cut above the  Delvac MX. The mobil ESP can be had for similar prices if you buy a 20l drum)

Related to golf and western in some way
In other words it is a cheap oil

Couldn't comment about what's good or not
I thought the point of delvac was because it was a mineral oil
None of that bore glazing that you can get from synthetics

mmm gulf western.

I understand they're just blenders, not oil manufacturers..

may steer clear of it. Delvac is cheap in 20l cans

I thought it was only an issue with new engines which is why alot also use mineral oil. I know this was the case with my motorbike as well as you need to change the oil within 1,000kms so you wouldn't want to waste the good stuff. And have read other info on it being the additives in some Synthetics that cause it.

There is just so much info out there that it also comes down to peoples opinion which makes it hard to find the truth lol.

Technically if you are changing you oil often you can use a good mineral oil as you will be changing it out before it starts to break down.

yeh - the more I read, the more I'm confused.

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com is a wealth of info on oils -- but it takes a bit of time to get through the acronyms to work out what they're on about.

Delvac style Diesel/Mixed fleet oils are discussed under Heavy Duty Engine Oils

Cheap and good.

Magnatec.  Every day of the week.
Comes in 10L drums too.

Change frequently (5-7000km), fresh, cheaper oil is better than old, fancy oil with bits of metal floating in it.

Wanting to buy/looking for: single genuine STi rim, genuine STi front lip, Corazon or Zero/Sports grille and another OEM grille

Can you hook a brother up? Please contact me now. I have cash ready.

10W40 for just about all applications,
I used the 5W30 in my Gen4 H6, but did notice it would chew 500ml between about 5000 and 7000km (zero oil usage up to 5000km)
Went back to 10W40 and saw zero useage for the full 7000km.

Using 5W40 Magnatec DIesel currently in the EE20, but it's pretty rattly when cold
I might throw the 15W40 in for a test and see if it makes an audible difference.

While we're on it, thinking of using Delvac in the new donk as it's got a fair bit of build up in the manifold, throttle body and intake tract. My old intake manifold off the old engine was spotless and the thing used no oil.

Engine appears to be in good condition and apart from some surface corrosion, the bores looked good and it has pretty snappy compression. Just never been driven hard enough?

Will be doing an UEC obviously but to my understanding Delvac or diesel oils have more detergents in them for better cleaning power?

Delvac made my motor leak. Assume because it cleaned the gunk out for leaks :P

Yes -- hence Adam's leaks.  They can clean the gunk out that's blocking leaking gaskets etc.

The benefit of Heavy Duty Engine Oils is supposed to be better shear stability - temporary or permanent loss is viscosity due to high shear conditions.

Only thing I'm concerned about is the amount of build up in the intake manifold. Is it indeed a sign of light use? I'm worried about clogged oil galleries and knock knock jokes...

maybe more a sign of lack of UEC use?

I've used Penrite hpr10 in a few of my turbo cars now.....and I haven't had the WRX for long but the service centre that did the last service for the previous owner put in magnatec 10-30, I checked the oil recently and it was quite grubby after doing 7000kms since, plus while draining it it was very runny which to me suggests it's breaking down quite quickly. With the penrite its always slightly thicker, it's consistency seems closer to the new oil. Anyhow has always been a good oil in my other cars, we'll see how she is in another 7000 ks

I've been using Penrite HPR5 5W40 Full Synthetic. Bad choice?

nope, it's a good oil.
more expensive than some, but cheaper than others.

It's a good viscosity range being 5W for your cold starts to help the oil pump get it through and 40 in the hot end to be a bit thicker when you're giving it a hiding, especially an older EJ engine with slappy pistons.. :D

pretty sure it's "Full Zinc" protection layer is similar tech as Magantec in keeping things slippery for cold-starts
