Hey all, how's it going? I've got a Australian gen2 liberty.
Have had no issues with the steering, or warning of failure. But was working fine one drive then the next no power steering at all.
The belt is fine, tight, pump spins. Fluid levels good.
No weird noises etc. Just no PS.
Where you reckon I should start troubleshoot?
Is there any electrical components or just mechanical?
Thanks
Joel

Pull the return line off the pump

See if it's pumping any fluid

Just off the top of my head I'm fairly sure the gen 2 has no electrical components on the pump or rack, some Imprezas had a bypass on the pump

Did it fail to work after a fresh startup (ignition on?).

Mine (Gen3) has done that in the past once.  Ignition, start, no PS (PS light on).

Turn off, restart, all is fine.

I think it fails some sort of startup check.  Though Rob's 'no elec on the system' note would preclude that in a gen2, if true.

Yeah failed after a fresh start. Didn't happen while driving.

yeh - sounds similar to what happened to me.  Did it once, hasn't done it since. I checked fluid level straight away and it was fine.

Hmm seems no electronics on the gen2. I have found though if I turn the wheel really slowly there is a bit of power assist. Try to turn fast and it gets real hard with no assist.
Bringing the revs up seems to make it worse as well.

I had a poke through the gen3 wiring -- doesn't seem to be any electronics there, either - apart from pressure sensor.

Maybe there's a regulating valve or something that sometimes gets stuck, air getting into the system?  Anyone know ?

My event was certainly distinct.  No power steering, even after a couple of revs. Turn off, restart, all good.

Might be the pressure relief valve stuck open.
Try swapping the pump over.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?
