Gday Gents,

Having a bit of a problem that has showed up a few weeks ago. Has me baffled as I'm not too cluey on the AT trans etc.

What the issue is, on cold start, the gearbox is whining very loudly and I'm getting random resistance on the steering. It's kind of like a force-feedback steering wheel for your Playstation. It's sporadic, it feels like the steering is really resisting turns and I get a vibration though the steering wheel at the same time.

It tends to ease off once the car warms up so I'm ruling out anything suspension related. These symptoms only showed up once the weather cooled down.

Now, I loaded up the gearbox with fresh oil when I did the engine swap, levels are good. I have no visible leaks from the steering rack or AT.

The one thing I think might be related is the whine from the box. My line of thinking is the front diff is not playing ball. I checked the oil level and it's low. It's probably the same oil which was put in it on the factory line back in '99.

Am I right in thinking the oil has had it and the front diff is binding, hence the abnormal steering? Or, is it just a coincidence I'm getting the symptoms at the same time? My other feeling is the steering rack is on it's way out.

I plan on changing out the front diff oil asap and seeing how it runs.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Opinions?

Nah the whining is under load.

I'm just talking to Dan (dja) about it now, quite possible it's my P/S pump having a cry and not the trans at all. Obviously can only hear it while I'm driving.

I'll try a fresh PS fluid change on the weekend and see how it runs.

I have some left-over DEX3 fluid I can smash in it, but I have no forking idea how much I'll need. How much does the PS system take?

Rev the car and turn the wheel when it's cold

That way makes it easier to test

Sweet, that makes it a bit more economical. Pretty sure I have at least a litre of trans fluid left from topping up the AT.

Will run a few tests on the steering and see what I come up with.

Cheers cubts

Spot on, Dan.

Rack is fooked. Leaking fluid, had nearly nothing left. Whining was the pump with nothing in it.

Upon closer inspection of the fluid reservoir, the crusty old fluid was stained up the side giving me a false reading of the fluid. I then actually opened it and realised it was pretty much empty.

I ended up draining the fluid out of the rack and topping it back up to buy some time. Also added some extra cable ties to the boot to stem the leak for extra good measure. Getting a nasty vibration of resistance through the steering wheel on hard turns.

Rack will need a rebuild. Going down that path instead of second hand, this way I know it's good and has an 18 month warranty. Going to give a mob near me a call and see what they can do. They do an exchange/recondition service. I'm not up to scratch on steering rack knowledge and have no idea what would be the same as the GTB rack, so I'll opt to have my rack revived.

Hey Jimbo,

I have a rack from my halfcut if ya want it.

I can not confirm its condition, don't think it leaks.

Can send it to you for the cost of postage.
