Lads I'm trying to diagnose a few electrical gremlins and tossing up an alternator swap.

For EJ206/208 do any other alternators fit? GC8? Or it is smarter to get my alternator refurbished?

Pretty sure running voltage was 13.8V. Haven't measure the current. Needs a jump start once per week. New battery arrives today.

Haven't checked belt tension yet either. Only just thought of that

13.8 sounds about right

Although they can drop down a bit under load
I've got one from a gd sti you can try if the battery doesn't fix it

Just need to check what plug you have on yours

Just remembered yours is an a-c rev
They are generally closer to a 99-00 gc8 parts

If you take a pic of the sticker on the alt should be able to tell from that

New battery fitted and running at 14.4V.

Belt tension was about 9mm. Within limits according to the FSM.

Alternator has a green Hitachi sticker but after messing around with the battery I forgot to take a pic. Off to work now.

I bought an aftermarket alternator off Ebay. Despite my reservations it has worked perfectly. Can send you the details if you want.

lol. I'm pretty sure that's a built-in feature by the OEM

Hi Luke. Why did you replace yours? Those details would be great, thanks

And duncan thanks v much for the cruise control info. Mine is tiptronic AT - I wonder if that ever worked with cruise. Just wondering how paddle shifting would affect it - I figure it'd need to signal a cruise disengage. Need to get smarter on this. Thanks again for typing that up

I replaced mine because I had been battling a cam shaft sensor code. Haven't seen it since replacing the alternator.

Here is the one I bought: http://www.ebay.com....tm/231666364686

Sadly it says it is out of stock but you might be able to send the seller a message and check.

At that price I make no guarantees that it solve the issues you're having, but being ebay normally you can send it back without too much drama because sellers like their reputation to stay intact.

P.S. Mine was a replacement for a Rev D alternator.

I found it by checking Partsouq for part numbers and cross referenced alternatives.

Thanks Luke. Seems random that a cam shaft sensor code was fixed by a new alternator. I've got a glitchy BFM gear indicator (randomly shows 2nd gear when it's in 3rd) and the rear wiper works when it feels like it. Just wondering if there's a power issue on the 15yr old girl.

Cheers for the link, and ack it's RevD. Might see if Rob's GD one might fit RevC.

I assume the alternator was affecting the signal sent by the cam sensor. It got worse with the lights on.

I tried a number of things before replacing the alternator. Two new sensors, new wiring, etc.

Rob you champion, thanks for the pics. The plug looks the same shape - is yours a 3-pin? Can't quite tell. Part numbers are close (not that that means much). Both engines are 2L turbos - I guess it shouldn't be rocket science and they both should draw the same current.

When you have a price in mind would you mind shooting over a PM?

Thanks again for the fast pic!

Opposedforces says that GD alternator is common among 2.0L STI motor down to 1.6L SOHC, but the Hitachi one is only used on the B4. Is the GD alternator computer controlled? Someone mentioned that earlier

Is yours a 3 pin ? Cause mine is

They are actually are all compatible, but if the plug is a different shape you need to swap that all around, hardly worth it.

Even if it is computer controlled

All the ecu does is pull the c pin to ground to shut the current off

What did you use to cross reference it please? I have EJ20H (gen 2 tt) and can't seem to find (google) any (reliable zources) specs related to the part number I get off partsouq.

Thanks :)
