Hi All, have a 97 Impreza and  the rear drums have strong brake smell emitting from them. brakes need pumping to work properly, fluid levels are fine. Is it just that they are probably worn and require replacement? anything else to check first? Many thanks

I think you've answered your own question. Best check out the pads and replace as necessary. Good opportunity to do the handbrake shoes also.

Or, better yet, It's all got to come out anyway so may as well see if you can convert to discs and calipers You could get away with that pretty cheap. Local wrecker could sort you out or I'm sure there's plenty of that stuff kicking around someone is willing to move on cheap.

Drum brakes probably means it's front wheel drive ej18.

I don't know if the discs from the AWD rear end will fit the rear of the 2wd without some custom work in regards to the hub.

The issue could be a broken return spring within the drum allowing the brake shoe to drag on the drum. Lifting each rear wheel off the ground and rotating will tell you which wheel is the offending side...

Cheers

I'd be looking at fwd gen 1/2's for rear disc brake conversions

Would do the job
