So i know my primary turbo is a VF31, but the secondary is failing, and i'm getting conflicting info from several turbo suppliers in my area as to what it actually is.

B4 is a 2001 BE5 rev C. I've been told that a VF32 will be fine, but another turbo specialist has said that a VF32 won't work, that i need a VF25, 26 or 27.

Would appreciate some clarification as to what will or won't work, and what the differences are between these secondary turbo units. Can anyone help?  :)

THE VF32 or VF27 are secondary turbos.
The VF25,VF26,and VF31 are primary turbos.
You can use any combination of a primary with a secondary.
The factory delivery combinations are:
VF31 and VF32
VF25 with VF27 the auto trans combo
VF26 with VF27 the manual trans combo

I definitely have a VF31 in primary, it is the secondary that is failing.

Just so i'm 100% clear, a VF32 would be fine as a secondary?   The car has done 150,000km's - would you recommend getting the VF31 primary replaced too?

Edit; thanks for the response too - sorry, that should have been how i started this post  :)

The VF32 is fine as secondary turbo.
The primary VF31 would be worth replacing at the same time, as they are usually worked much more than the secondary turbo.

^ Excellent - cheers.

That's where my thinking was heading anyway. Also getting some quotes for a single-turbo conversion, but at this stage, will likely stick with what i've already got. Will see how the quotes stack up and then make a call on it.

Thoughts on single-turbo?

The VF31 and the VF32 use the same size wheel sets/BB cores.
The VF31 is a rarer turbo than the VF32.So you can replace the one in your VF31 from a VF32.

So put a VF32 in both the primary and secondary positions?

My jdm half cut is a rev c and has a vf32 secondary. So a vf32 will definitely work for you

So put a VF32 in both the primary and secondary positions?

Probably won't work cause compressor housings are different. Plus vf31 bring a primary has a Watergate. Vf32 being a secondary does not

No,the centre section or core (CHRA) of the turbos is the same.If you cannot find a VF31 you can have the CHRA from a VF32 put into your existing VF31
The VF31 has a wastegate attached to it and uses a P11 turbine housing.
The VF32 no wastegate, uses a larger P18 turbine housing plus different uppipe bolt pattern.

Sorry, i'm such a noob - i know that a VF32 is secondary, so should have known it wouldn't be able to go in the primary position.

I can get a brand new non-genuine VF31 for NZD$488 (yeah, i'm a Kiwi), so that might be my best option. Got a VF32 coming - Subaru genuine, and used, but supposedly from a vehicle with only 30,000k's on the clock.

So the final outcome here is that i got both the turbos replaced. VF 31 and 32 with VF 26 and 27.

Whilst i don't know a lot about the mechanical side of vehicles, having had the car for around 10 years now, i know how it drives; it all seems a hell of a lot smoother, gear changes are less jerky and it's running great.

Not sure if you can tell, but i have the old turbos from it, and i'd be happy to take photos of them if anyone was interested in having a nosey?
