I currently have a Subaru Outback 2000, its my first car and I absolutely love it! Only problem is, it's not the best performance wise and it has done a lot of Ks... So I've been thinking for months now, whether to keep it and upgrade it so it's a better performance car, more so a sleeper type thing, or to just buy an entirely new car? I'm not sure what car I would buy yet but would probably work out to be around the same price to either upgrade or buy new.

If anyone could educate me a little in the costings of upgrading nearly everything on the car, as well as the interior it would be great!

Thanks

Is your outback a 2.5 or a 3.0 H6 ??

How much extra performance are you after ??

Dude, Gen 4's are SO cheap now and alot of car for the coin.

You can pick up a pre-facelift GT for about $7k.

3.0R's tend to hold their value a bit more but can still be found pretty cheap. Just a choice between H6 or turbo power.

To do an engine swap into your Outback, you need to factor in ALOT. You'd have to start with a half-cut, the easiest being a similar year GTB (twin-turbo) but even then, there's alot that needs doing. You'd also want to spend the money refurbishing as much as you possibly can with everything out of the car. You would also have to consider the down-time doing a conversion, it's not a simple weekend job and you'll always come across hiccups and things that don't want to work or play ball. If you decided to do something like a bug-eye WRX/STI half-cut, you would need the wiring harnesses spliced for it all to work.

It's a big job, very much achievable but better on a project car that you can take time with and not your daily.

I would recommend buying something as a complete package. It will save you headaches and retain it's value. Conversion aren't worth much when it comes time to sell. If it's a 2.5 NA you currently have there's pretty much 3/5 of fork all you can do to make it any quicker. You can de-lift it, add coilovers and fancy handling bit's but that's pretty much it. The 2.5 NA's just don't have anymore to give.

You could probably still get $3-$4k on your Outback (pending it's condition) in the market.

I'm surprised there wasn't a reference to a goat or something else obscure to the topic at hand...
