Hey guys/girls I have a lovely B4 that died on me the other day, I stopped for fuel and went to start the car and it just would not fire up. When I turn the key to the ON position I can't hear the fuel pump priming.

So I had it towed home and ordered, received and installed a new fuel pump.

Same problem, the fuel pump is not priming in the on position.

I then hooked up power directly to the fuel pump and it started no prolems.

I checked the plug to the pump with a multimeter and theres no power. So can anyone help me with this? Could it be the relay to the fuel pump? Somebody told me there is a fuel controller? Never heard of this before?

Any suggestions welcomed

Woody

Fuel pump controller is located behind the passenger side panel in the boot, just in front of the jack. It runs the pump at 1/3, 2/3 or 100% depending on engine load.

I think many people bypass it altogether and just run the pump at 100%.

As you note, could be the controller or relay.

Yes there is a fuel pump controller. It's a grey box, but I don't remember where it is in the car. See Above.

My mechanic changed it for me (new part from Subaru). I don't remember it being cheap.. you might find one second hand. I spent about about a week changing relays, fuses and the fuel pump in my old B4. I even ripped out my Brant alarm in the process because that also cuts the fuel.

He explained that as the fuel pump dies (or a clogged filter), they draw more current through the controller, eventually killing it.

Hey Woody,

I think the H6 outback also uses the same pump controller.

What fuel pump did you put in ??

Thanks caution That certainly does look closer. Does look like the one I am looking for has a sloping top as well. Many thanks Fatdog and caution. Certainly looks a good candidate. Do you know if there are any other hitachi models with the same shape?

This dude is worse than Bumpty. At least Bumpty kind of makes sense, sometimes, possibly.

Cheers
