The power steering in my car is stuffed. Like really stuffed. It's stuffed to the point it doesn't work. The steering is incredibly hard all the time and at this rate, i'll have forearms like pop eye from trying to steer my car.

I've already changed my power steering pump but that did nothing to help. I have no idea what else it could be apart from the power steering rack that's giving me difficulties with my steering..

Anyone else have any ideas or suggestions on how I can tackle this problem? I'm now planning to order a used power steering rack and swap it over with the one in my car which hopefully will fix the problem and if not, that'll be $500  that i've thrown into fixing this problem with no solution.

Cheers people.

Some extra details would help.

What car do you have? Is it the stock rack? Did you bleed the system when you changed the pump? Is there enough fluid in the system?

You could need a new steering knuckle. Mine died and it was down right dangerous to drive with it the way it was.

That could be your issue, unless your rack is completely gummed up from something. It’s not often a rack dies.

1) I've got a 2004 WRX wagon

2) It's a stock power steering rack

3) No I didn't bleed the system after I replaced the power steering pump

4) Yes i filled the reservoir with fluid after I changed the power steering pump

thanks

maybe start at the beginning.

Q: Why did you replace the pump in the first place?

A: because steering was hard.

Q: did it go hard suddenly, or was there a gradual decline in performance?

Q: did it make noises?

Q: did you try flushing the fluid, bleeding etc?  Did it make a difference?

Q: anything funny with the fliud?  It should be nice and ATF-clean.
