Personally, driving at 60kph, I use 4th gear.

What are your own experiences on this subject?

Those of you who are cruising around in 5th gear, is the economy any better or worse than using 4th gear.

In the B4 the revs go from about 2.2k to 1.5k, which in theory should give you greater economy, but my boost gauge reads a lower negative vacuum level in 5th gear therefore higher engine strain.
Also, there are zero hills in Adelaide so using 5th gear shouldn't be a problem.

Discuss.

2nd. Keep it in that nice RPM ready to piss off. I also drive through school zones (40km/h) in 1st.

Hard topic. I run 4.11's which is what the B4 runs, think 3rd and 4th are the same ratio... I usually go in 4th, or whatever gear gives me the lowest RPM - not because of economy (my car doesn't do that), but simply to get the thing to be quiet.

4th

I find if I'm in 5th at 60, I'm constantly going down to 4th, then back to 5th and on and on.
It's fairly hilly here so that might make a difference.

I drive an Outback so economy is always good. Meh

Grow-up Dylan. This is a serious conversation.

:D

My 1st gear goes up to 60, so should I just go from 1st to 5th? Or just drive around in 1st gear at 8000rpm?

5th, manual says 4th till 70??? WTF

i go 5th to keep it quiet.. i can still pull most hills fine, but i would usually drop to 4th.

if I'm doing 50 ill even go to 5th, until i need to accelerate, but if its a constant speed i can stick to 5th

HAHAHA.

Yeah, I got my RPM limit increased to 8250 so I can go that little bit faster in first gear :)

Yeah, I wouldn't go 5th gear at 50. At 60 it's probably the lowest I would go in 5th.

I notice neglible difference in fuel economy with how i drive.. hell last cruise i went on i fanged it in 3rd most of the way through the hills, i spent an hour doing skids on a dirt road and doing launches and i got the best economy i have had in months.. 600kms out of 50L.. normal soft day to day i usually get closer to 500 from 55L

Oxygen sensor?

I usually get around 430km per 50L (when the light comes on) which is a bit over 11L/100km
