I'll ask my mate who's helping me do my STi conversion if you like Jamie?

He's a licensed Subaru mechanic and all, so it's not shifty.
He also owns a Dunlop super dealer shop.

Cheers,
Shazza

jamie the clutch will be somewhere between $400 (for OEM) to $800 (for HD - not recommended!) depending on where you get it. probably a few hours labour to put it in so i guess a a few hundred should cover that.

You'll get away with an Exedy HHD (Theyre stronger then a HD, I had one in my skyline, its basically a HD with a GTR pressure plate, the Subaru ones apparently have some kind of strengthened STi pressure plate) for under $1k.

My mate is running one in his WRX Evo 4, pushing around 460-470hp at the engine, and it holds up perfectly fine.

Cheers,
Shazza

DO NOT PUT A HEAVY DUTY CLUTCH INTO A SUBARU!!

You'll kill the box!!!

The clutch is meant to be a fuse between the motor and the gearbox!

There is no need for one in your application!

Dare I ask what gearbox old mate is running?

I would advise against a SUPER heavy duty.

I've got a standard spec. Exedy in mine and have had no issues, HD will be OK but it will just put your box at greater risk of breakage.

To be honest, I would totally agree with this. I was after a HD but after putting OEM spec. in I have certainly not regretted it.

jamie yours is the standard v5 wrx 5 speed??

if you go the super heavy duty route start saving for a new gearbox asap ;)

EDIT: Just realised i've repeated the last two comments. i guess that makes it a +3. Do not go HD or Super HD with the standard subaru 5 speed. they are notorious for breaking these boxes

Regardless of STi box or stock WRX box.

I would not go beyond a stock standard clutch.

if you want a heavier clutch, you better be rockin' a PPG/PAR straightcut box.

I believe it's a Hawkeye STi box, with a PPG or similar straight cut 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

His gearbox can take a raping, hence the HHD clutch.
Will confirm though.

you should stay OEM even with an STI box as Alex said. it's a simple fact that HD is over kill for the application

6 speed gearboxes are a different kettle of fish....

But for all intents and purposes, I won't discuss this here. :)

I got my clutch from Repco, was only $360 for the kit, was a OEM excedy pressure plate, throwout bearing and a Valeo Clutch disc, I'm pretty happy with how its holding up.. farking cheap compared to OEM,
Valeo do OEM clutches for European cars.
i have had no problems.. and it's not that much work to do it yourself.. easy days work. just pull the engine, drink some beer, and have a mate help you

Agreed.

I have only fitted standard clutches to my cars with modified engines.

No busted gearboxes or fried clutches.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

Exedy standard replacement in mine, seems a bit tougher than stock. But still soft enough to act like a fuse. :)

I think mine was about 1400 to replace though...
