noise in reverse gen3

claire6's Photo claire6 26 Mar 2011

hi guys,
looking at purchasing gen3 my00 manual wagon
when in reverse makes a loud clicking noise like cv click on turns but doesnt matter if turning or not it happens as soon as car moves?
all other gears fine, guy selling it took to subaru and they said cvs but im not convinced, sounds more like gearbox.
anyone have idea or had similar?

also what gearbox is interchangable with my99-my00 rx wagon manual?
any one have one for sale?

thanks heaps for any help.

Mate if the car's it not moving and it's making a noise in reverse it's not the cv's.. If the car is rolling, the cv's would be making a sound going forward and back..

Just look for another RX, don't waste your money on a faulty car.

noise is only in reverse while car moves back, almost sounds like a wheel catching on plastic innergaurd..car is cheap.

Any vibration through the gear stick in sync with the sound?

I know the noise you mean my old RX made it and my mates 99 RX does it too. I think it's something to do with tue diff but im not sure.

Maybe get a quote to fix it and use that to get the price down?

Just weld some wheels nuts in there? Hahaha.

But seriously, I dunno if the auto diff is same ratio as manual diff, but if it is, I have one.
Someone will have to confirm though. I have NFI.

I'm guessing it won't be.

Cheers,
Shazza

car is cheap.

May end up costing more in the long run.

You would need to have this accurately diagnosed to be able to put a price on it.

Look for something else, there are a lot to choose from.

Maybe a chipped tooth on reverse gear?
