So, dismayed, I jumped back onto carsales.com.au and starting hunting again.
And a little fairy whispered in my ear and said "Why not just go for the GT?" and I said, "It's a little bit more expensive than the 3.0" and it said, "but not that much, and at the end of the day what's a few thousand matter in the grand scheme of things" and I said, "Little fairy, maybe you are right".
So I took another puff on my crack pipe, sat back and considered....GT...3.0R.....GT.....3.0R.....

If you can spare the extra coin, definitely go the GT

Bare in mind, I'm 32, and past that boy racer era...I would do some subtle mods, but nothing major as money gets chewed up on other life stuff......
With that aside, why would you go a GT???

With all the horror stories I hear about Subarus and their turbos, this would be my choice.
*puts on flame suit*
I will be replacing the RX with one of these when the time comes.
If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

Yet, the turbo would be awesome too I assume...plus you get the nice intake in the bonnet....
Oooh...and fuel consumption....the GT would be more economical in just normal driving yeah?....
Oh what a dilemna!
I think I need to take another big puff, play with my nanocube and ponder some more....

I think it depends on what series you are looking at. I would recommend giving them all a test drive - and that you try to focus on gen4 series 2's as they have the SI drive feature (Allows you to adjust the cars 'driving attitude'). Sure, the 3RB's are nice, go nice, sound nice, and have the simplicity of a NA - but if you are in to modifying your car even a little bit, I think you might regret going the NA route over the turbocharged route.
There are some people that say the turbo on the Gen4 series 1 (the 2.0L motor) is prone to blowing up, the gen4 series 2 GT has a 2.5L turbocharged motor, SI drive and sports a different turbo. Plus you already have the added torque of a 2.5L on this model.
SI drive that is missing from the series 1 3RB can result in a strange feeling from the accelerator pedal, and I was with Paul (twinturbosubaru) last night doing some data logging in his car in an effort to get to the bottom of the 'throttle hesitation' that he hates. I have not driven a gen4 series 1 GT so unfortunately I cannot compare it to the others that I have driven.
Fuel economy is fine, the SI drive helps to sort that out (There is an 'intelligent' mode that turns the car in to a total slug - good for putting around and saving fuel). I think the Gen4 GT (series 2) has bilstein suspension also, whereas the gen4 series 1 does not. The 3RB does have bilstein's obviously also.
Anyway, hope this information helps!

Im going against popular opinion and say the 3.0R.
I'm on this boat also, but think you should drive both and tell US what you like more.
Ugh i could ramble on for forking days about this stuff.

Ongoing servicing costs, better fuel consumption, no tendency to want to 'fiddle' with it (may be a downside, depends what you're looking for), chain drive opposed to belt drive, and I don't care what anyone says a turbo engine has more chance of blowing up than a similarly treated N/A, throttle hesitation due to being an early implementation of the fly by wire system is nothing compared to turbo lag.
What do you want from the car?

Nik

What does a GT do in the real world? I have a consistent 8.2(4)L/100.

My 3.0 consistently drank a fair bit more driving same manner/route.

I get better fuel consumption than our MY'10 XTL, which sits at 10.4L/100 at the moment. Both cars have been serviced in the last two weeks.
