What's crackin'?

Keen to get some extra driving lights on the Outback. When my battery died at the end of last year, I bought a heavy duty one in anticipation but it's kind of been on the back burner ever since.

Was looking at making/buying a light bar but I'm liking Shiv's idea of mounting them in the lower air dam.

Went for a trip around the local auto shops to see what they have in stock

Bursons -
Mostly Narva products
Ranging from about $100 - $250
Both clear and yellow lenses

Repco -
Mostly Narva products
Slightly cheaper than Bursons

Supercheap -
All SCA products
Ranging from $20 - $100
Both clear and yellow lenses

Are SCA products really that bad? They are soo much cheaper than all the others!

What are the benefits to yellow lenses? What are peoples opinions of them? I don't mind them personally but I have just removed all orange-ness from the exterior of my car!

Hi,

Cannot see any way that mounting them in the lower air dam would allow sufficient lower angle to be legal, without rendering them completely useless.

Stop me if I'm wrong.

Cheers,
Nik

You referring to the front bar/number plate getting in the way of the light beam?

Valid suggestion I suppose.

Shiv, how have you found yours?

I prefer this way so I wouldn't have to get used to an extra 200ml on the front end of my car!

Morgan, I don't personally know how much better the yellow is, but apparently it is purely for fog an won't reflect as bad, I've wanted to put some in my fogs for a while, we get some pretty thick stuff out at my place, I guess you need to decide on what purpose you want the lights to serve, of it's just to be seen on the road better mount them however you want, better reach high beams I would say you need them up higher to get most benefit out of them

Edit: sorry is im stating the obvious, I'm just so so bored!!!

Hi,

Can't see how low mounted non directional lights would do anything beyond the fogs. They have to be on the same angle as your fogs anyway, otherwise they'd be illegal. Shiv's alignment looks like a defect to me.

Nik

Hey Morgs,

Avoid the SCA range of auxillary lighting. I've noticed the SCA stuff is cheap as! I'm far too sceptical to think you'd get anywhere near the same level of quality or longevity as the equivalant name brand (Narva, Hella etc).

If you want driving lights, they must be mounted at or above headlight level. Furthermore, you may as well go for clear globes as the yellow ones won't travel as far. They're designed for low mounted fog lights like mine.

Nik, mine ARE fog lights ;) Also they are directional - I can aim it to the sky if I wanted too...

I'm going to be buying a nudge bar for my car, and mounting some big fsck off spotlights on it.

I've always had expereince with Narva lights, and haven't had any problems Morganass.

Cheers,
Shazza

So does that mean I'm not allowed to drive around at night with my lower fog/driving lights?
Cause I always do....

I flashed a cop once (didn't know it was a cop) for leavin his high beams on coming the opposite direction. Decided to chase me, when he finally caught up to me I made him follow me for ages til I had somewhere safe to pull up. Asked why I flashed, explained I was blinded by his bright lights. Proceeded to tell me they were driving lights and I whod be more careful. Breath tested and went on my way. Arrogant knob he was! So if you are a member of the fuzz you can have them on apparently.

Hi,

Shiv, no you can't that would be illegal. It's not me that makes the law mate, I think it's stupid too. But you cannot point your lights wherever you want.

Cannot be operated at the same time as driving lights or headlights, and can only be on if the weather conditions call for them. Interpretive as it may be, that is law.

Cheers,
Nik

Fog lights should turn off when high beams come on.

In Vic you are only allowed to have your foggies on during 'adverse atmospheric conditions' IIRC.

I never understood why most cars have the fog/driving/annoythecr@pouttapeople lights wired to the parkers from factory.

Morgs, Steer clear from the SCA stuff. If it were me, I'd choose Hella and wire it up with a relay.

Oh, and people who drive with rear fogs on, I will HUNT YOU DOWN!

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

Yea dad has some old Hella's from yeeears ago and they still work perfectly.
Wouldn't buy the SCA products. Very cheap and nasty looking things!

When you turn high beams on, wouldn't you want as much light on as possible?

Yeh I know mate, I didn't say I would, I said I could ;) It would defeat the purpose of a fog light if I aimed it at the sky :P

When you turn high beams on, wouldn't you want as much light on as possible?

Yeh the law is quite specific in this regard. But at the end of the day, wire it up how you like it. Its not as if your one of those old coots who accidentally drive around with the high beams on, so you'll be right.

The theory is that bright white light is reflected by the fog back to the driver, reducing the distance you can see.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?
