B4 manual gearbox issues

im looking at buying a b4, looking rather seriously at one in sydney.
i have decided i want a manual, however have been hearing mixed reviews about the gearboxes in them, heard from some saying that they are weak and your more than likely to blow a gearbox, others have said they are fine as long as theres the proper service history.
has anyone out there had any trouble with them or have any opinions of them?
any help would be greatly appreciated!

Never dump the clutch in the dry, even in the wet i put a massive thump through the drivline, and never or do flat changes. I know of a Non turbo Impreza that went bang on a flat change.
Even hard shifts should be fine if you only do it rarely.
Use commonsense and you should be fine.

Is that when you change gear without the clutch?
Get out of my thread.

I don't flat change or slam gears though.

When you change gears without lifting the throttle. Done it a few times in my impreza but I doubt it has any advantages.Just curious, whats a flat change?

My mates STI had a program on the ECU, when his throttle was on 100% and he engaged his clutch the ECU would hold the engine revs at 5500 or 6000 rpm Which meant he didn't loose boost through gear changes. I reckon it felt smoother when he did that then lifting of the throttle. But I'm not sure how he's gearbox liked it.
Unless your gonna be doing massive launches and skidpans every weekend you don't have much to worry about with a stock b4 box.

They are strong, its only when retards drive them and dump the clutch (which you should never do, a proper launch you slip the clutch out) and dont treat them well that they blow. (or stupid amounts of power)
You should be fine with it.

Its the same as the wrx 5 speed boxes.

Same as GC8 WRX box's GD WRX's use 4.44 box

My 5speed is still silky smooth. Where did you hear they were weak?
couple of guys at my dads work tried to tell me they arent that great and that i will more than likely blow it up one day. rang MRT Performance in sydney and talked to them about it and they said theres no such issue, and thought id just ask on here as well, and from what ive heard from now multiple sources theres really no issue with them if you treat them right!
hopefully will be able to lay my hands on a B4 soon now

MRT will spin you any yarn to help u spend money, sometimes B4's have a issue getting back into first when rolling or downshifting , i put a nice expensive gear oil in and havent had a drama since , if your box ever does blow , drop in a 6 speed:)
