got some questions about fmic set ups

first off . intercoolers i know size matters the bigger you can fit the better but what about brands ?
is there a differance between a cheap $120 no name intercooler to lets say as example a $400 blitz brand same size?

2.5 inch pipes or 3 inch out of cooler as i know you can get silican 3inch to 2.5 inch reducers ? and would it make any changes to flow eg. any pro's or cons

also is it true that one 90 degrea bend = 3 straight pipes ?

i know this would have been covered 1000's times before and could google this

but im looking for personal opionions and experiances and recommandations

also is it better to run pipes down thrue the guards
or cut just under the head lights and run pipes thrue ?

im also assumeing as commen sence that theres no differance between polished pipes and non polished pipes besides for show?

been qouted $250 for non polished pipes includeing installation

or $500 for polished includeing installation

is there anything else i should be looking at before installing ?

will i need a ecu chip ? as im usieng the JDM ecu atm so by takeing the tmic off and puting in a fmic or will the jdm ecu adjust it self to the change ?
have manual boost controller in atm but have a electronic blitz sbc controller to go in just have not got to wireing it in yet

[EDIT] also is it illegal to cut your front bar ? and have your fmic or would it be fine.? or if it is illegal could you get away with cuting the front bar then useing mesh to cover over

Hey,

Bigger the better... not always. Most regular streets cars will gain no benefit from a massive core over a slightly smaller one (within reason)

Piping does not need to be huge, 2.5inch would be big enough, most people over-compensate this with their fairy tale thoughts of running 600HP

NFI about the 90 Degree question, sorry.

I do not know that it is illegal to trim the front bar, however there is a crash bar that runs in behind this and cutting that will give you a defect if the police see it, not to mention various insurance issues if you are involved in an accident.

From what I have seen most people with a Gen3 need to trim the crash bar to fit the FMIC.

There is a guy on rslc selling kits, his name is billsy. If you flip the cooler core, you basically won't have to cut a thing, more shave the bar. (which this kit does) costs about 600 I think, and everything is included.

Also, innthe single turbo section of the forum there is a thread named gen 2 fmic kits that may be some use to you. Or it may not

This is a very good thing :D... epically good price too!

Fmic hanging out the front is just asking for attention from the wrong people!

Hi,

What else are you doing to the car to warrant the need for a FMIC?

Cheers,
Nik

well in december will be droping in a ej207 to start with
then possible going the ej257

going for around 250+ kw will be a complete new build
but i cant see why i cant do the fmic side of things now with the ej20g engine
also will be uping the boost from 12.5psi atm. geting ecu/injectors/fuel pump/fuel regulator cheap from a mate
she only has to last me till december

and i can use the fmic / part of the pipeing for the new build and injectors ecu and fuel system

[EDIT]

been reading i can get around 16psi with a fmic and good tune rather safe have been reading some ppl have reached higher with no issues
and the stock standard tmic wont handle that

Gen1's need a front mount. As the scoops are so small!

I'd like to see a flipped fmic on a gen1 that you won't have to cut a thing.

From my experience you need to cut a fair bit.

Hi,

My advice would be to hold off on the install until the new motor you're planning is ready to go in.

There is a lot to be said for doing something once, and doing something right.

If you aren't upgrading the tarbot before then, I would think you may as well save for a reputable manufacturers setup.

Cheers,
Nik

#10 = this is the 10th commandment, this statement should be cast in stone.

Wait until you drop the new motor in and then build a FMIC set-up to suite the needs of that engine rather than trying to guess at it before hand.

yeah that is a good price

got it for free and is in good condition

HKS brand not that i believe brands really matter alot

believe he paid around $300 to 400 for it

[EDIT]
so im really just paying for the pipeing and was just going to go the non polished for $250 bucks and thats including installment thats includieng him supplying the pipe
im not so sure on buying the injectors and so on im mostly just wanting the microtec ecu system

Mounting of the core won't change.

But piping probably will be different for a 250kw set-up.

He does kits without the ic too i think, but not as extensive.

Generally from what I've seen it's 2" hot side piping, 2.5" inlet on ic, 2.5" cold side to 2.75" silicone adaptor to throttle body.

Possibly get new outlets put on core? Or sell it, and buy one to suit needs.

But as Mark said, might be different for a higher power set up.

Avoid Microtec.. they are cheap but they are the biggest POS ever developed anywhere.
May aswell just sit down and drink a 600ml bottle of cancer.

yeah but im weighing up options

i mean $250 bucks for pipe and bending and installment
with the new motor and it not fiting its only a loss of $250
for some extra power out of the ej20 before i remove it
