Gen2 2.5i Headers/Extractors

Ren-dog's Photo Ren-dog 17 Nov 2011

I have recently purchased a Gen2 2.5l NA liberty. There was a small rumble/tinny noise coming from the engine bay and upon inspection it turned out to be a crack in the extractors.

Now i have been looking for a replacement but cannot find any definite compatible replacements.

I would like the UEL ones to get that boxer note for when i replace the exhaust which i will also have to get custom made, unless somebody can point me in the right direction to buy a pre made one.

I have found a couple on ebay but im unsure if they will fit or not.

All advice is welcome.

P.S. I was planning on installing an XForce Varex or having it fitted on the custom exhaust when i get it.

Cheers,
Ren

the first two are no good for you. the gen 2 rx headers come down the drivers side of the sump and meet the rest exhaust under the drivers feet (similar to turbo models) and head straight back into the centre pipe unlike some other n/a models which direct the headers around the passenger side of the sump then loop around the back of the sump to meet up with the rest of the exhaust.

you may have an issue with the headers fouling on the underside of the engine cross member (gen 2 rx/heritage use the same cross member as turbo models which is lower). an exhaust shop can mod the headers quite easily to fit by extending (inserting about 3cm of pipe to each side) the headers where they meet the engine. that will give you the clearance you need to clear the cross member.

I jumped under the car this afternoon, I have the headers that go over the diff or whatever it is.

If you can make sense of these pics. One is outlined by the yellow lines the other is the original photo.

I'm a bit annoyed that i may not be able to find a replacement now... Especially because of that sensor...

Maybe these...

Or these stupidly expensive ones...

sorry i may not have been clear enough, what i was talking about is how aftermarket headers run. the oem headers go over the cross member (as in your pictures), up into the engine bay then back down (similar position to a turbo dump) to meet the exhaust. instead of the ridiculous bend into the engine bay and back down, aftermarket ones will run under the cross member in a much more sensible path and meet up the exhaust there. you can get any exhaust shop to add an 02 sensor bung into the headers where ever it's required.

this is how yours look now:

This is how it will look with the aftermarket headers

This is a set of headers modified with the bung added for the 02 sensor

Do you know how i know this? because it's on MY98 Gen 2 Liberty 2.5

Cheers mate, Heaps of help! Sorry i didnt understand your original post fully, walls of text dance around when i try to read them so i get confused a little.
So the grey ones from original post will have to be modified.

Righto, well im intending on seeing the local blokes and getting them to make up an exhaust for me as nobody can get one to suit the car. With those headers it should also be cheaper as they dont have to put so many bends in (thats what makes up the labor cost).

BTW, nice clean engine, especially compared to mine xD

Cheers!
