premature ejaculation (timing belt)

is it just me, or is 60 000km way too soon for a belt to blow it's load?
Tilt tray home from the twin servos yesterday.
We just had a set done at 194000, and ok, its 2 years ago, but seriously - F3, 120km a day to/from work, 3 grand max (100km/h ish), not thrashed. '98 2.0L 5sp man. I'm anal/OCD with maintenance.
So seriously, wtf?
cheers
Greg

I would have gone to the kitchen, collected a brown bag, dropped my dacks, pinched off a loaf in said bag, done up dacks, stickytaped bag, placed bag in envelope, and mailed it right to your face for being such a tool.
It's ok, sometimes when we herp, we also derp.

Who replaced it last time? Was it installed correctly? Brand new timing belt used? What brand?
Cheers,
Shazza
I put up with people from amnesty, red cross and now the cancer council almost daily hounding me!! Throw in the greens, green peace, unhcr, save the forking children and I've well and truly hit my limit for the number of fuckstains wanting me to sign something or give money. Seriously cubts, right off.

mate I can only assume it was installed correctly with a new part. Lic Mech did the job, and he's done all the book services on the car for the cook, has a good rep (as far as I know) and has looked after her (if you'll pardon the expression).
Yeah, I guess the finger of suspicion is pointing towards "belt fault". Just hope I have some recourse, cos if not, I'm probably going to have to sell the bike. NOT happy Jan.....

Warranties aren't usually worth their weight in paper, I'm afraid, in these circumstances, unless we're talking seriously premature failure.Does a timing belt have a warranty, im sure the alt/ps/ac belts have a 60 000k warranty
Need to ascertain if the brand, who installed it, and if the complete kit was used during installation, and a *certified mechanic installed it.
Usually they also send some tech out to inspect it. They like to drag out the process, to make it most inconvenient for the vehicle owner, who will reluctantly just pay for the whole thing so that they return to the road sooner.
OEM FTW.

lol at "certified" - yeah very loose definition.
I'm also experienced with Fair Trading stuff too, it's only $30 to lodge an Application.

It's not that 'ing difficult to replace the tensioners, there is no real reason to re-use them when parts are readily available.Perhaps the last mechanic may have reused a tensioner and it seized?
Strip it down, and have a lookysee as to what happened.
BTW not aimed at you.. aimed at the mechanic if he re-used them
This should also appear on the box under "Warranty Conditions"Warranties aren't usually worth their weight in paper, I'm afraid, in these circumstances, unless we're talking seriously premature failure.

If ole matey wasn't paying attention, when you wind the belt on they can slice the belt.

Is the timing belt guide (sits above the crankshaft sproket) still there?
If ole matey wasn't paying attention, when you wind the belt on they can slice the belt.
That happened to me, their was two different bolts in that cover, and I found another bolt the same that went thru the belt. I was lucky my timing only jumped a few teeth and I sorted the problem before damage was done.

The crank should have a slinger above it, which prevents the belt from skipping teeth ( DOHC) have them on crank and every cam gear. As luke said some people get lazy and dont adjust these correctly and the belt has the ability to skip.. All it takes is 3 teeth out!

quivering in anticipation of the mech getting back to me. beast is in his yard atm. The better half says she remembers him saying that he wanted to replace the OEM belts early (194000km) just in case, but he reckoned they were good to 200.
Big drop from 200 to 60?!?!?!?!?!
Didnt get a chance to get a look under its skirt before I dropped it off so I cant answer your questions about bits.
will keep you informed!

belt is basically shredded wheat. All bearings & pulleys are ok. Guides ditto. No obvious marks on anything. Mech's theory is the tensioner - says he's not absolutely certain but process of elimination leads him to that. Says he has seen about 8 similar cases in the past year which he says is why he will only install a kit and not individual components or belts. Fair call.
When I put belt failure to him, he agreed it was entirely possible but we come back to Alex's scenario. Warranty is 12mths/50k.
So it would appear I'm pushing the proverbial turd up a hill.
Of course I'm going to repair it -too good a car to tow away, and at least if min'e rebuilt/repaired I'll know where its been.
The things you do.....
May have to sell the bike to fund this venture.....hmmmmm....unlike....

all pulleys, guides n associated bearings etc replaced. Tensioner and cover replaced (definitely issues with the bolts per bobbyjimmy's comment - thread looked as though a dentist had been trying to get the bolt out with pliers), 8 valves, heads reco'd. 1 spline missing from pulley (cant remember which one) - could have been a factor in the cause or maybe just collateral damage.
At the same time, clutch thrower bearing, heater hose, couple of other odds n sods.
$3k thanks for coming!
He did say this time it would be good for 100 thou (in front of witnesses) so I guess I'll just chalk this one up to experience, and at least now I know what to look for.....and best of all, the beast is haunting the central coast again!
Really appreciate the thoughts and advice folks!
