It didn't come up too bad. On the difficult edges, you need to use a splicing technique, where you overlap 2 sheets of vinyl, then use a surgical knife to cut a dead straight line down the middle. When you peel off the overlapping bits, it meets at the centre of the cut, and if done correctly, you'd never be able to tell it was done with 3 sheets on vinyl.

The real test will be the actual dashpad itself. Thats certainly going to be interesting.

Also, might be worth noting that I didn't need to heat that vinyl at all. Just stretch.

Sure improves the drabness that is 80's car interiors.

I would have gone to the kitchen, collected a brown bag, dropped my dacks, pinched off a loaf in said bag, done up dacks, stickytaped bag, placed bag in envelope, and mailed it right to your face for being such a tool.

It's ok, sometimes when we herp, we also derp.

I'm actually trying to source a good looking dash out of a newer model Corolla (90s, 2000's) and try and retro fit it into my current dash. Same with the centre console.

I don't reckon it will be too hard.

There's not exactly much back there that you need to work around :P

Put some fusion splits in the front today. $39 from Supershit auto.

Also vinyled the kick panels where the speakers go.

The bits where the bolts go are gunna be painted black with a permanent marker. No chance of getting the vinyl to go down and in them.

So i suppose an update is in order.

I have finally decided on a motor for the rig. The poo brown corolla will be getting a 3RZFE out of a 2000 hilux. For those that aren't aware, the 3RZFE is a 2.7L fuel injected 4 cylinder, that makes around 142hp @ 5000rpm and 217nm torque in stock form.. It has a 95 bore x 95 stroke, and runs a 9.5:1 compression ratio from the factory, which is perfect for low boost applications. A company in America does complete kits to rebuild these motors, as well as factory TRD supercharger kits with a choice of different pulleys.

I will be getting the motor and a hilux 5 speed off a mate in the coming weeks, and then I will be slowly acquiring the other parts to make the conversion happen. As the hilux runs a hydraulic clutch, and the KE70 is cable operated, a AE71 pedal box will be a must, along with a much larger clutch master cylinder and brake booster. I already have ventilated rotors on the front, with massive Toyota Tarago brakes, so the suspension and brakes are already done. Luckily, I have a AE71 crossmember already out of the car, so I can fab up some custom engine mounts to where I think it should be sitting.

The sump is an issue with the conversion, as most Hiluxes run rear sump setups, which does not suit the AE/KE crossmember, so I'm trying to source a Toyota Tacoma (USDM Hilux 4x2) sump, which apparently has a more center/front sump due to it not being AWD. LCEngineering in USA make a customer dry sump setup, but goes for over $3k, which I am not keen on doing at the moment. I think a cut and shut on the sump should do it, as the oil pickup is at the front of the sump.

The Hilux 5 speed apparently fits in with relative ease, however, after looking at the dimensions of the box compared with the body of the Rolla, I think the gearbox tunnel may require a bit of massaging to fit. Gearbox X member will be fabbed to suit.

Tailshaft will have to be a custom one. The hilux one will be too long I'd imagine, so will need to be cut down to fit.

This brings me to the diff. I'm still unsure of what to do here, but I've been reading that there is a few people who are running Hilux diffs, and rightly so, as they are strong as. I just need to find out whether or not they are using the complete diff, or just the center. If it is the whole diff, i simply need to drop the diff out of the KE70, cut the diff mounts off both diffs, and weld/reinforce the KE70 mounts into the Hilux diff, then send the whole thing away to a diff shop to get the axles cut to length, and upgraded. I will also fit a LSD to the diff while this is happening.

Fuel tank needs one of two things to happen. First option, is to purchase a JDM AE86 EFI tank, that comes with baffles inside the tank to limit surging. The second option is to weld some baffles into my factory tank, or run an external surge tank/lift pump/HP pump seperate.

ECU wiring shouldn't be too hard. I'm actually considering biting the bullet, and running a full aftermarket from the get go, as to limit the amount of wiring in the engine bay.

Alot of research to go, but all is looking good for the moment.

Cheers,
Shazza

Sounds like you've mapped out all the plans nicely Shaz, but do you really want to do such a complex conversion on your daily? The 4a conversion is at least a straight drop-in with an AE crossmember. You could do it in a weekend, compared to the hilux swap.

I can imagine 217nm being a bit of fun in an 800kg chassis though...

Well this car will be seeing some different forms of motorsport once done, as well as being a daily driver. Theres a few reasons for my choice.

1) It will have enough torque to change the earths axis.
2) It has 42 more horsepowers over even the best 4AGE motor, in standard trim.
3) Parts are cheaper for the motor
4) You can make big power from adding forced induction on a standard, unopened motor.
5) Its unique, and has only been done a fistful of times.
6) It is the biggest Toyota motor available, that is able to be LEGALLY in the car.

And last but not least, I'm getting the engine and gearbox for $500, which leaves me with alot more dosh to actually spend on the rest of the driveline.

Considering the car will be a drifter for alot of the time, having all the power available at under 5000rpm is a big plus for me. It isn't a fast spinning motor. There will be less strain on the motor, and will prolong longevity in a car that weighs half as much as the car it was originally desinged for.

In short, its a bulletproof combination.

Cheers,
Shazza
