A grinding noise only when stopping would normally pinpojnt an issue with the brakes. You'll need to get under the car and check your CV boots and drive shafts, jack up the car and roll the wheels to check for any noise from the bearings.
rip the wheels off and check the levels of your brake pads or for any scoring on the rotors.
As to the steering issue, it could all be related?? A sudden change in direction is a tracking issue and unless you're finding some slack in the steering wheel, it probably won't be the steering rack, but further along, like tie rods or something. Check for perished bushes and any play in the suspension.
If you can't self-diagnose and remedy, get to a suspension specialist as soon as possible. It sounds like a pretty dangerous car to drive at the moment. They may be able to pinpoint the grinding noise too.

i've already checked out the breakes they are a year old next month calipers pads rotors everything, plenty of pad life left. rotors look fine, but on the caliper the top slid pin pulled out real easy they normaly pop when you pull them out but this one didn't so i greased it up and the noise seemed to go away but now its back. im hoping the steering isue is tie rods or something simple like that, i just droped $530 in it this morning on a new set of kumhos and dont realy want to be droping another $500 into it
Tyres, brakes and suspension are the things you should never not contemplate spending money on.
A few hundred bucks is worth a whole lot less than a potentilly dangerous ride and the damage that could result. At least get it checked, with a report on what needs doing or if there's any danger in driving it.

Words of truth!
The grinding sound does sound suspiciously brake related. Do you have a rock between the pad and rotor? Is the brake pad backing plate warped or something to the point where it is scraping on the rotor? Your caliper on the drivers side front hasn't collapsed and jammed shut on the rotor? Does the car feel like its pulling to the right under heavy braking?
Cheers,
Shazza
I put up with people from amnesty, red cross and now the cancer council almost daily hounding me!! Throw in the greens, green peace, unhcr, save the forking children and I've well and truly hit my limit for the number of fuckstains wanting me to sign something or give money. Seriously cubts, right off.

I have stones stuck in the calipers both in my Legacy and in my pulsar. Sounds like the exhaust was scrapping. I was lucky as the stones came out not long after getting stuck. Look for damage to the rotors, like grooves which indicate a stone wedged in the caliper.

Look it up on IM, then send the Yahoo Japan auction number to Jesse Streeter, he'll ship stuff anywhere.
