So I own a gen 2 liberty, that just has plain a plain a/c / fan unit. I have found a JDM GC8 climate control unit (the in dash piece) for a very cheap price.
My question is, if I wire in the climate control unit into my gen 2, will it function like climate control should, or would it require modifications to things like the actual air conditioner?
Thanks.

It's not that simple. You would also require the various temp sensors (5 in total if I recall correctly). The solenoids/actuators are also different, eg. temp control is cable operated on the standard unit, electronic on the auto unit. The fan speed control is a variable resistor switch on the standard, electronic on the auto, etc. Because of things like this the wiring is more complex on the auto unit so you would have to add wires to your harness behind the dash.
Seems like too much work for little gain to me.
