Only really need to sign up if you want to comment and upvote/downvote things or get a tailored 'front page' with all your favourite subreddits (threads)

Opens a new tab or opens in the tab you're looking at?

Either way you can click the centre scroll wheel on your mouse or hold CTRL+click the mouse and it'll open in a new tab.

They do a addon for google chrome called 'reddit enhancement suite' that changes the entire way the site works and you can open images and youtube links inline with the page....but...save that for another day
