Hey Guys,

My car is making a groaning noise and a slight viabration whenever i turn the wheel left. I read that it is most likley something to do with the power steering. I was planning on replacing the hoses attached the resovoir.

Just wanted to check if anyone else has had any experience with this?

Car is a manual Suby outback 2000.

Thanks!

I don't think just replacing the hoses will do much mate. Are they leaking? How is your fluid level?

They arnt leaking, and the resovoiur has plenty of fluid. I found this which sounds like it had the same symptoms.

Other things I am thinking,

-tyres
-the boot cover on the left side has a small crack in it
-CV joints.

My mates rexy was doing this, it turned out to be the power steering unit. But it would do it when driving, turning into a roundabout etc. CV's (usually) only rumble at full lock. My car was squealing under tight steering at one time, turned out to be loose accessory belts.

Sounds like air in the lines. Jack it up at the front, undo the hose clamps on the bottle slightly, pull the reservoir bottle up out of the holder and turn hoses around so it stay sticking up. Pull off reservoir cap, start car and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock a few times. Also check the level and colour of the fluid as it may have over heated and gone off.

As above, air in the lines.

You could try bleeding it, but I doubt you will get the air out.

When the pumps get old the shaft bush wears and the seal can't cope with the shaft running slightly off centre. This means the pump is sucking in a small amount of air and the aerated fluid is what's causing the noise.

The pump will need a reco.

The only other thing is the two O rings on the pump inlet fitting, if these leak the pump will also suck air.

Neither of these faults cause an external leak of fluid.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

Thank you Jase! This is exactly what is happening to mine! Gets air in it, but no source of leak. Are these DIY rebuildable, or should i just remove the pump and send away to get re built?

Probably best to send it out as prolonged use with aerated fluid can damage the pump beyond a DIY repair.

My GenIII needs a reco but doesn't make air....yet.
If I do it before I sell it, I may do a DIY.

Just a tad.

I like to think of it as borrowing someone's car and driving it better than them.

A new one is $1900  , reco's are $200-300. :)

For the time, parts and lack of warranty a reco would be well worth considering.
