Temp gauge reads as overheating

So this problem has turned up during the built of my car.
I have a Liberty RX with a WRX motor in it, and when I turn the key to acc. the temp gauge rises all the way to the top. But when the car is started it drops back down.
Has anyone seen this issue before? Could it be a wiring issue or would it more likely mean the sensor is rooted?

If its a wiring issue I may have to leave it then as I have no idea when it comes to that. Or I wouldn't have sent my looms off to Al.

So started the car up and let it run for awhile and the temp gauge doesn't move.
