OK so I've noticed this in the last few days. I can't put my finger on anything specific but this is how she is feeling:

During idle, the car is vibrating more than normal and it feels out of sync, like unco.

Small rapid turns of the steering wheel aren't smooth.

Acceleration feels rough, like something is loose or grinding.

I just had a service on the car in the last 400kms and the only things that needed attention was the rocker cover was leaking and my RHS rear strut was leaking a bit, but not excessive.

I have no error codes displayed and the car hasn't been driven erratically or in a way that could perhaps have caused what I'm experiencing.

Sorry if my explanation is confusing, that's just the best way I could describe what's happening.

Also, in order for me to remove the rocker cover, will the engine have to be removed? The mechanic seemed to think so.

Thanks.

I did my own rocker covers in my driveway in half a day. Had to remove the battery and some intake piping, but definitely not the engine. I'd be a bit Sus about that mechanic!

Not engine related. It's not clunking either. Josh took her for a drive today to try and decipher the probs. He wasn't used to the auto transmission but seems to think it might be a problem with the LHS rear wheel bearings. There are other issues too like the accelerator pedal not feeling smooth when applied and it making a slight creaking noise.

The mechanic wasn't sure, but thanks for the heads up, I feel optimistic about attempting it myself =)

All in all she is definitely not driving the way I know she should be so I might get another safety check. Any recommendations?

Like cylinders misfiring? Could be a dodgy injector or possibly worn engine mounts.

Small rapid turns of the steering wheel aren't smooth.

This could point to issues with the Steering Rack and/or CV shafts

Valve covers can be done in car... being SOHC its a bit easier.

make sure you buy new valve cover bolt seals.. from memory there will be 8 per side on that engine

and new Spark plug gaskets..

When was the last oil change?

wrong oil can make quite a difference in how the engine feels.

Auto or manual?

if its auto.. check the transmission fluid levels

have you done an upper engine clean in the last 10-15k? that will do wonders

also check your accessory belts.. could be as simple as a slipping belt causing some issues

Update: the hum sound coming from the LHS rear is noticeably audible at 70+ km/h.

Could it be center diff? Car has only travelled nearly 127,xxx km's. Either that or wheel bearing prob but definitely you can hear something is not right.

Sussed my wheel bearing issue a little while ago. My old man weighs about 120kg, and he sat in various seats before the noise got much worse when sitting in the seat next to the wheel bearing that was on its way out. Go for a drive on the freeway or something similar for some high speed work for a half hour or so to get the bearing warm. Then get someone who weighs a bit to do the switching around. This won't work too well getting a 50 kg person to do the seat swapping. If it's a wheel bearing, that trick will find it. If it's something more, you need to suss out a different method.

I had a VERY similar issue. It ended up being my wheel bearing. I replaced both front ones last week and haven't heard any noises whatsoever since.

Thanks Ben, I'll give it a go when I can make time.

Thank you also Gary for sharing.

Was it trial and error before you worked out it was a front wheel bearing or did you replace both anyways?

Pretty much trial and error. I assumed it was the left hub, so I replaced it with a second-hand one. The noise wasn't as evident but it was still there, so I replaced the right hand side with another second-hand one. The noise was still there.

I took my chances and replaced both hubs with brand new ones and now it's gone altogether.

Replacing your hubs would definitely be the cheaper option as well.

For rears, you get a replacement bearing assembly - mine cost me about 70 bucks. For the fronts, you are better off replacing the whole hub assembly. You can replace just the bearings, but its dirty and fiddly work and in my opinion, isnt worth the messing around compared to replacing the entire thing.

Gary - how much did the replacement front hubs set you back?

I paid $300 for each front wheel hub including labour at ICHIban.
