Dont use your rattle gun on them! Too much risk of tearing the guts out of the bolts.

Plan is to buy a pre MY99 Lib, Outback or Foz flywheel (solid, not dual mass) and possibly used clutch at a wrecker then replace throwout and pilot bearing and install.

Should be a lot cheaper than the dual to single mass conversion kit from Exedy as seen here http://www.ebay.com....=item19de91416f

Don't really want to buy a new clutch since I will be swapping it all within a year for the turbo conversion.

It should work right? just got to get a flywheel from a wrecker then have it machined and new pilot bearing.

Dual Mass to Solid Flywheel Conversion

Everything has been ordered and I have this Saturday free to get this car back up and running (hopefully noise free).

Here is the list:

1. Extended T50 Torx impact socket $22, to remove dual mass flywheel (carsrus.com)

2. EJ22 Clutch kit R1142 $205 (brettstruck.com.au)

3. Used MY01 Lib solid type flywheel $110 (JJ Auto Parts)

4. 8 x flyhweel bolts to suit $30 (Subaru Parts)

5. 4L Multitrax $43 (Supercheap Auto)

I think this is about as cheap as I could have done it since the wreckers wouldn't sell me a used clutch. I'm not going to bother machining the flywheel or replacing the pilot bearing either. The bearing feels good and the surface is nice and flat. I will just give it a light sand and clean it with brake cleaner.

Looks to be quite a cheap pick up for all those parts. Nice work mate. Progressing well with the repairs.

1. Extended T50 Torx impact socket

Don't they use a 'T50 Plus' bit?

A plain T50 is what people use when they strip the bolts and have to drill them out...

Really? I googled it and people were saying T50 torx, nobody mentioned "plus" in the threads I read :dash2:

Pretty sure I did mine with a plain T50 torx. Had no issues at all.

If you put the T50 in, then hit it with a hammer to seat it right in it should be right.

Good news is I managed to undo the old flywheel with the T50 torx, it is clearly the wrong one but lucky the bolts weren't mega tight and I could undo them.

Bad news is the bolt spacing on the new pressure plate does not match the new flywheel :dash2:

This is the clutch I bought http://www.brettstru...42-mr1142n.html

and this is my flywheel http://www.ebay.com....=item2ec8662b97

any thoughts?

It would be a lot easier to return the flywheel as it was a wreckers in Sydney, clutch came down from Newcastle way.

ok I used the VIN listed on ebay to purchase new flywheel bolts since Subaru won't sell you anything without a VIN, just checked and they have given me new bolts with that stupid T50 torx plus head on them. So I'm thinking that flywheel never came off a MY01 Lib like it says in the ebay add since that VIN would be for a dual mass flywheel.

I also got onto the website http://catalogue.clu...ustries.com.au/ which is where you can check the catalogue for the clutch I bought but as now I am not sure what car that solid flywheel came off its a bit hard to work out.

Funnily enough the old pressure plate off the dual mass flywheel matches up perfect with the solid flywheel off ebay.

Well I had a crazy day today, lots of driving! but I think this saga is finally over. I phoned the guys at Brett's Truck to tell them the clutch I ordered was the wrong one and acknowledged it was my fault for ordering the wrong one. They were very helpful under the circumstances, turns out the depot for clutch industries is in western Sydney so I made the trip out there to try and swap it to the correct clutch, took the flywheel with me to be sure.
The guys there were also very helpful but the correct clutch for that flywheel I had was going to cost an extra $350 so I decided to just get a refund.
I then headed back to the wrecker and got a refund for the flywheel, they were also very helpful and understanding. I also phoned Subaru and they agreed to refund me on the bolts too.

I then drove all the way down to Wollongong to pick up an Exedy kit (part # FJK-7374SMF) which is designed for replacing dual mass flywheels on cars like my outback. Its a full kit including flywheel, pilot bearing, pressure plate, clutch disc, release bearing and flywheel bolts. The only thing it doesn't come with is a clutch alignment tool (would have been nice). All up it was $575 on special, usually costs a fair bit more than that and it was their last one, luck was finally on my side! more than I wanted to spend but I just want to get it back on the road now.

Here it is, its going in tomorrow.

Yeah the other kit had just the throwout bearing. Turns out there are about 3 different clutches available (non dual mass) for Liberties up to MY03 and none of them are interchangeable. I tried to do it as cheap as possible but not knowing that info the odds were against me.
