NEIGHBOURS made a gruesome discovery yesterday when they discovered the body of a man crushed underneath a car in his garage in Helensvale.

The man, a truck driver and car enthusiast in his 50s, was working under the car in his home garage in Latrobe Ave when the tragic accident happened.

Police are yet to work out whether there was a fault with the jack holding the car up, or whether there was human error involved.

Police believe the man’s body had been there for more than 24 hours before it was discovered at about 5.25pm.

A neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said she first noticed the garage light had been left on and the garage door was open, about 5.30am yesterday.

“I noticed it was open but I just thought he was working on the car,” she said.

Later in the afternoon a man arrived with a parcel for the deceased man.

“I said, ‘He must be there as his garage door is open’ but the man couldn’t get hold of him, so I rang his mobile and left a message,” she said.

The neighbour eventually climbed the fence and found the man’s body.

“He was cold so he’s probably been there all night but I just feel awful that I didn’t look during the day,” she said.

She said the man was a “nice, friendly chap” who lived alone and kept to himself.

“He was always tinkering on the car — it was a hobby. He’s always had cars he was fiddling with. That’s why we didn’t think anything of it,” the neighbour said.

A work colleague also asked police to check on the man about 3pm after he had not turned up for work, but police did not check.

District Duty Officer Senior Sergeant Brett MacGibbon said police narrowed the time of death down to between 11am and 3pm on Monday but did not know exactly what happened.

“He was working on a car and something happened and it’s rolled backwards off the jack and he’s received fatal injuries,” he said.

“Our inquiries established that it’s certainly in excess of 24 hours.”

Mr MacGibbon said police were unable to check on the man at 3pm because there were so many other jobs on.

He said the Forensic Crash Unit and Scenes of Crime were investigating the incident.

“The inquiry established the gentleman who is deceased was well familiar with vehicles and it appears it’s just a tragic accident.”

He said the jack had been taken away for further examination but it was unknown whether there was a fault with it.

“If anyone noticed anything or heard anything out of the ordinary that may have been a precursor to the accident, we’d certainly like to hear from them,” he said.

This.

So that's what happened..

I was jacking my car up earlier and some old man walked past my house and said "Hope you use Jack Stands, so you don't end up like that guy on the Gold Coast.".

Probably too soon for that!

RIP, poor bloke.

I like to think of it as borrowing someone's car and driving it better than them.

Shit, that is terrible! Brad looked like a likeable bloke!

Acts as a timely reminder to be careful working on our cars for HVC.

What do people think the likelihood of "Mr MacGibbon said police were unable to check on the man at 3pm because there were so many other jobs on." being true?

I call BS.

RIP old mate.

A timely reminder to everyone to not only just use jackstands, but if you've removed the wheels off the car, put them under the sill as well!!! Always on a flat surface too.

You can never be too careful.

I put up with people from amnesty, red cross and now the cancer council almost daily hounding me!! Throw in the greens, green peace, unhcr, save the forking children and I've well and truly hit my limit for the number of fuckstains wanting me to sign something or give money. Seriously cubts,  :fork: right off.

This is how my good mates brother died, leaving behind a wife and two young kids.

ALWAYS USE JACK STANDS, never only a jack.

RIP

Dan, I wondered the same thing.

The neighbour claimed the garage door was open and lights on.

If cops went passed the house, they would have thought he was just working on the car. But that's a lazy driveby. They probably didn't even bother diong that. If a single call comes through saying they haven't seen their neighbour today, as if anyone is going to go out there...!

Highly doubt that 3pm on Monday afternoon was rush hour for the cops.

Terrible news, atleast he went doing something he loved.

I always use a few bricks as chocks when I work under my car at home as well as Jack stands. Little bit of extra insurance

It's always better safe than sorry.

I personally think that that was the excuse they came up with so no one comes complaining and suing.

I always just thrown the wheels i took off under the sills, truthfully i don't always use jack stands
and i bet most of you have done a quick change of something and thought meh...

but yeah i can attest to also having a close call.. Scissor jacks fail.. and when they do Ohhh damn..
Always work on a level surface.. i killed 3 in like 8 days having to swap tyres on cars on the side of the road.. due to the camber of the road... on the way down they just let go.. not fun.

I would hate to read of anyone here having a fail like this and being injured..

you know those worksafe ads and those apprentice "Just ask" ads.. seriously.. it takes less than a minute to ask on here or the FB page.. i bet nobody here will flame you for asking a question like "Where do i jack my car up" or similar.

I'm actually surprised how many people don't know where to jack up their Suby from :o

I don't have a flat spot at home. My drive way is a slope..

I always use jack stands and chocks and handbrake and car in gear though.

I have the same issue, so I only get under the car if absolutely necessary.

Makes me VERY nervous as jack stands won't save you if the car rolls. I place some old rims under it packed up a bit with blocks of wood.

Sounds ghetto spec but better than jack stand for sloping ground.

Just to be 100% clear, always use stands on level ground and avoid jacking on sloping ground.

Unfortunately I have no where else to work. It's not a steep slope, it's pretty gradual and my garage is flat, so I jack up from there.
Not ideal conditions, but I take plenty of measures and someone in the house always knows when I'm under the car.

My thoughts exactly. They would have not been bothered to do the drive by. Would have been particular people just being lazy and passing it off that nothing was actually wrong. Shits me to think that if they had have done a proper check, he might even still be alive.
