For the second time in a month, Subarus Forester has beaten nine competitors to win a major comparison test, this time in the August edition of Wheels magazine.

Rating 8 out of 10, Forester 2.5i-L out ranks the Renault Koleos, Honda CR-V, Mitsubishi Outlander, Hyundai ix35, Toyota RAV4, Volkswagen Tiguan, Mazda CX-5, Nissan X-Trail and Ford Kuga.

Wheels says: At the beginning of this exhaustive test, no one guessed that Subarus Forester would be standing on the podium, let alone in the gold medal position. But here lies a textbook example of how to do things well, some things exceedingly well, and almost nothing badly.

It concludes: And then theres Foresters price. At $35,990, the 2.5i-L is one of the least expensive SUVs here, yet it still scores a reversing camera, dual-zone climate, 17-inch alloys, privacy glass, and handy little sunvisor extenders. Admittedly, the works-burger 2.5i-S is another $8k, but given that includes collision-mitigation tech and more toys than a spoilt childs play pen, Forester maintains its value-for-money appeal right to the top. And thats exactly where it finishes.

The same Forester variant also rated first among 10 compact Sports Utility Vehicles in a mega-comparison test published in the July edition of 4x4 Australia magazine.

For the latest full 24-page comparison, see August Wheels, out now.

I like it too. First thoughts on the first pictures I saw on it were very "Hmmmm"... But first sight IRL and I was sold.

There are three basic trim levels in the Forester range, as well as a choice of four engines. The entry-level Forester 2.5i (X in SH) costs $30,990 in manual guise (plus on-road and dealer costs) and gets a 2.0-litre engine. The automatic version costs another $2000 but gets a 2.5-litre engine.

That's the model we've tested here, and it comes with Bluetooth, cruise control, automatic airconditioning (dual-zone for auto models), reversing camera, DataDot theft deterrent, seven airbags (dual-front, front-side, side-curtain and driver's-knee) and a full-size spare wheel.

Step up to the 2.5i-L (base XS/X Columbia in SH) and there are front foglights, a leather steering wheel and gearknob, alloy wheels, tinted windows and a sliding centre console.

The 2.5i-S (XS Premium in SH) costs $43,990 and brings a sunroof, electric driver's seat, auto tailgate, heated front seats and mirrors, satellite navigation, auto wipers, smartkey and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Those wanting a diesel engine can opt for the 2.0D, 2.0D-L and 2.0D-S, which share similar features to their petrol counterparts but no auto transmission option.

At the top of the range are the turbocharged XT models, priced from $43,490.

Subaru's Eyesight system, which uses stereo cameras to keep an eye on the road, adds $1500 and can auto-brake the car to avoid a crash, warn when the vehicle strays from its lane and lock its speed to the car in front.
