mice in the engine air filter

14 August 2018 - 09:05 AM

We've had an outback since 2012, keep them parked in the garage.  Recently the check engine light came on (as well as brake, cruise disabled, etc).  Took it in.  Paid the 120 diagnostic fee.  said "too lean".  As they looked further, came out with a mouse nest chewed into the air filter.  Paid the 159 recommended flush of the system (fuel induction service).  Decided to check our 2017 outback and sure enough, just the start of chew marks on the air filter.  Cut some 1/4" screen to fit around the air filter hoping to prevent access.  Dealer recommended placing some dryer sheets.  We live in the suburbs, a few miles outside the city.  The cat brings us mice fairly often, so this was a new and big surprise.  We have mouse traps in the garage.  But sure is an expensive lesson.  Many years ago we had mice chew up out forrester wiring.  any other bits of advice to deter entry???
