a good sign you're valve stems seals are gone is if you are coasting down a long hill at high engine vacuum for an extended time, smoke will come out when you start to accelerate again.
I've done them on a 4age before, but no idea on a suby. Might be a bit of a challenge with the engine still in the car?

can be done in the car, but lots easier with the engine out, need to remove the cams, pressurise the cylinder (compressed air) then compress and remove the valve spring and retainers, replace the seal then refit al lthe buts you've removed, 8 times over. you only need to do the inlet seals, the ex. ones dont leak.however most of the time if the seals are leaking and its blowing excessive smoke the valve guides may also be worn, meaning heads off and replacing / re machining / reaming the valve guides.
