So the urge for a manual car is growing slowly day by day, and the opportunity has now presented its self to buy an outback, same year as mine, with a few discrepancies.
The car im looking at is the top model I guess you'd call it (Can't remember exact name) with dual sunroofs, leather interior etc. Whilst mine is a base model with none of the luxuries.

The car looks great in photos (pending inspections of course) and mine has slight panel damage and needs a visit to the ol' panel doctor for some TLC and paint. I have been quoted to get the work done on my car (Maroon Outback) at around $1100 but it will still come back being an auto slush box.

The car im looking at (Green outback) has done around 260k kms (Mines just ticked up 190k kms) and the seller has indicated that it is in need of a water pump (which to me says the headgaskets may be on the way out if they aren't already gone) and I have recently had mine replaced on my car because EJ25 lyf.

So my question to you guys is. Would my plan of doing a straight swap of the engine from my car to the donor car be

a) as simple as a straight swap (Considering they're the same year build)

b )Worth-wile considering I know the condition of my engine

c) expensive given I have access to everything needed (Girlfriends family races rally cars including a GC8)

The plan would be to sell the Maroon outback afterwords with the Green outbacks engine in it

Anyway, torqued to spec is just the manuals way of saying 'we couldn't get it any tighter, see if you can'.

Just want to type it out to make sure im understanding this

Current car is maroon with slush box and paint issues. Manual car is green, manual and no paint issues but needs engine work?

I dont see why it wouldnt all just swap over. Would be worth doing clutch and flywheel while gearbag is out so that would be your main cost afaik

Yep, that's the most of it Nick, I was thinking the same, but it would pend on how old the clutch/flywheel are already, if the owner says they have recently been replaced I doubt I'd bother

This is true. Factor in valve cover gaskets, rear main seal and a metal oil separator (idk if gen 3 had plastic or metal so might not need one) etc. If the clutch is good should be able to do it for pretty cheap and over a weekend if it goes well

Only thing then, is when you are finished, you still have another car with engine issues. If you plan to move it along you'll have to address the water pump issue or it'll be worth scrap.

Until you inspect it, I wouldn't discredit the green one with overheating issues yet. The pumps can leak, yes, but won't necessarily mean the engines on it's way out.

Not 100% on engine issues, just reading between the lines at the moment

If you get to it and the green one is fine and only has a leaking pump, whip the lot out and do it all at once as Barbs has said.

At least you know your current one is good to go and only needs cosmetic TLC. Though you know the condition of your engine, it seems like alot of hassle swapping the engines over, even though you will have to do the green one anyway. Double the work?

Its really all dependant on the condition of the engine of the Green car
I just don't want to get done with another HG a year down the track if I just use the Green car as is

Find out if the green car has had the gaskets done. If not put your motor in and enjoy clutchy goodness. Otherwise id just fix the pump and maybe do a timing belt while youre there.

Then buy my RSK seats :P

Gotta sell them some how, just as long as you don't turn into Mitch Allard trying to sell those SSR's every 5 seconds...

get the green tested for exhaust in the coolant by your local mech.

Why does he know the pump needs replacing?  Is it leaking?

If its ok - then as others say, replace the pump and leave it as is.

... then hit up your girlfriend's family to help you swap a turbo in :)

He said he has just had it serviced and was told it needs one.
The green one comes with no reg or roadworthy so my reg would be transferred etc.

Can't go turbo for another 2 years :(
