Manual boxes have issues too. Know a bloke who had a Golf. Cluster gear bearing shit and exploded out the casing. Worst thing with VW's is if it does need major service especially gearbox stuff you'll be waiting ages for parts to come from Germany as nothing is stocked locally.

I have heard of the horrors of the DSG losing power on a hwy, but I agree with Mike that a gear box is fine unless you go to town on I. Although I would be loathe to replace a gearbox with less than 100,000km on it. Trying to find a used car with approx. 50,000km on it.
