Hi guys first post on this site, just wondering if any of you would have any information on how difficult an engine swap would be out of an auto h6 outback into a forester? Has this been done before? Is it a
S simple as taking the transmission and engine out of the outback and putting it into a forester?

I would prefer manual but I was looking at something to have a bit of fun in an go offroading and think a forester with an auto trans h6 would be quite nice

Any help would be appreciated thanks

It's definitely not as simple as removing one engine and plonking in another. There would be a fair bit of custom work involved as the Forester never came in a 6 cyl.

Al and Miles have done it though (not sure what variant of EZ30 or model of Forester) so I'd advise giving him a call to discuss your options. However, I'll put money down on him suggesting you just buy an XT :D

Rubbish..

Hed talk you further into doing the H6 swap.
EJ25's are garbage without big dollars spent.

it'll cost you, but makes them an excellent reliable bus

Al posted a build on OzFoz somehwere

This!!!

This is Als bread n butter, and he loves doing it. So he would be suggesting to do it for sure ;) possibly even with a few other mods lol

Really depends on what foz its going into...and what series outback its coming out of? As once you bring canbus into non canbus gear it becomes a tad more expensive and often requires an aftermarket ecu etc, in no way impossible though!

Keen to see the outcome mate!! Always love a good suby conversion :)

Quite possibly.

I was just reading another thread on a different forum and they made the call. Al said he could do it but pretty much told them to buy an XT.

All good.

Thanks for the feedback guys, this is only an EOI atm as I own neither a forester or an outback/spec b lib. How much do you guys reckon the build would cost all up?? How much of the forester needs to be modified to fit a h6?

What model forester would be best to convert in your thoughts too? I currently own a wrx so I don't want this build to cost me an arm and a leg. But would a newer or older forester fit a h6 better? I think one of the new foresters with the nice HUD in the dash/facia would be great if it could be adjusted to suit a h6 (the screen that displays fuel consumption etc)

Anymore feedback would be lovely :) thanks guys

A&M did a EZ36 into a S2 SG forester.
I could buy two SG XT's for the price of the conversion.

Cool conversion.

Go the manual if you're going to do the conversion.

In my offroading group we've somehow managed to end up with both of his first H6 conversions, the green genII H6 manual liberty and the blue foz, also a manual. The lib runs the cut down stock loom and ecu with the siamese port H6. The foz is the individual exhaust port unit I believe with the variable cam timin with an aftermarket ecu. Just got a new stainless exhaust.

I don't think the foz platform has really changed all that much, so in terms of fitment you'd only have to really focus on which has the larger space for the radiator. Gearboxes bolt straight up as do flywheels and I'm 99% sure the engine mounts are in the same spot.

So in terms of the conversion mechanically you need to look at exhaust, radiator/cooling setup and possibly air intake (from the top of my head). The rest is the fiddly bit - wiring and tuning if aftermarket ecu is used.

Both go like stink, the foz engine gets more ponies but has to be tuned for them ;)

Cheers

That was written off then bought and parted out by Ben.

The foz was owned by a guy that I think was named Scott, forum username SKT on other forums. This foz afaik has lived in wa qld and now Vic.

The liberty was Al's personal car. I believe he built it to be his wife's shopping trolley but this is second or third hand information. Sounds good though!

Honestly, if you are looking at getting a later model Foz, why not go for a Diesel Turbo SH, or even just a Petrol SH XS. My XS goes pretty well off road, plenty of power capability.

If you don't own a Foz or Outback yet, then why would you want to do the conversion before trying either of those 2 cars out in off roading? Serious question.

Search for Shiv's newest Outback and see what he did with it, it's what I'm looking at doing to my Foz. I think if you bought either a Foz or Outback you'd find you wouldn't want to change it other than some little mods here and there.

That H6 Forester is awesome, no doubt about it, but the comments are correct when people say it's forken exxy to do.

Better bang for buck, 07 Outback Shiv spec'd.

For some reason I always thought it was green.
