Gents,

Apart from obviously changing the oil out of the box, what are some other things that can be done to prolong the life of the AT?

First AT I have owned so not too cluey about it. I think it has a filter cartridge on the side of the box, looks like the dump has to be removed to access it, has a big hex head on it? Also, when giving it some welly and coming off throttle, it goes bang. Likely to be the box or the diff smashing into something, I'm thinking bushes are probably hanging on for dear life?

Or, would it be easier to take it to a AT specialist and say, "make nice again?"

Regular fluid changes and a trans cooler.

Does it change nicely or flare between gear changes? Bang I would put down to worn bushes, most likely diff ones.

Yep, pretty much filter and fluid.

If the fluid is really dirty, then it will need a flush. After the oil is drained and refilled but before the engine is started, re direct the oil from the radiator cooler into a container. When it comes clean, refit the line and top up fluid.

I have the same problem sometimes, and have been told that its also possibly subframe bushes as the whole front it lurches forwards and backwards....

Cheers for the tips lads, might be Mondays job.

It changes gears okay, albeit with a bit of a thud. I don't quite know what you mean by flaring, Mark? As if it's not engaging the gear or "slipping"?

Could be smoother and it's a bit whiny.

From what I can tell with the service history, I reckon it's still running the same fluids from the factory it peeled out of in 1998. Dave kept a very detailed and comprehensive service history on it, though, I can't see anything which suggests a transmission service had been carried out. As for the other 2 owners, highly unlikely.

Now, can the filter be bought over the counter anywhere or is it going to be a Subaru stealership venture?

Shift flair is when it the transmission slips between gear changes. The rpm's increase and then drop once the gear is fully engaged.

ie, sitting on 3000 rpm in 2nd gear and when it shifts into 3rd the rpm's increase to 3400 and then once it fully engages 3rd it drops back to 2800 rpm.

Nothing listed there. Mine is the old style "staggered" shift type and not the Tiptronic which the B4's got. B4's have a bigger trans cooler and the filter is located next the vacuum tank.

A proper flush of the system, not just a drain and refill.

-car on jackstands
-remove rubber discharge line from ATF oil pump, poke it into a big bucket
-start car and pump fluid out until fluid splutters out.
-stop engine
-refill box and repeat until all the fluid coming out is nice, clean and new fluid

Use Castrol TQ95 or whatever the current equivalent is, you'll probably need 10 litres.

this method ensures that all the fluid in the TC and lines is pumped through,
draining the pan is not sufficient
