Didn't get a hit on the HVC page, so opening a new topic...

So quick question to all HVC attendees, I've got a left front speaker problem as of late where it has started to vibrate more (like you hear when people have a more expensive sound system in their car than the car's worth - and have it on so loud that the car resonates) as if something is loose and was wondering if the Gen 3 gurus can give me a hand diagnosing and rectifying the problem?

original speakers? Sounds a bit flappy (not a metallic rattle) ?

The foam surround in the speaker has probably gone. Time for new speakers all round.

Yes original speakers, not sure if it is a metallic rattle...

Only on one speaker, rest is fine...

Joshkong, do you have a spare front speaker?

yep - that'll be it.

If one's gone, the rest are probably shot, too. Just not flapping.

All mine are gone. Am tossing up whether to go tight-arse and refoam them, or fork out for new speakers.

duncanm has it the nail on the head. The surrounds on the OEM speakers (tube-looking thing that connects the cone of the speaker to the metal frame) were made of foam. A combination of age, heat and general flexing back and fourth causes the foam to just disintegrate. You'll probably find that the other speakers are not far off having the same problem. I've even seen some that appear fine at first and then you touch them and the surround literally turns to dust!

Replacement speakers that are going to be heaps better than the OEMs aren't that expensive. Just beware of speakers that are low mount or meant for shallow doors. they'll sound rubbish and distort at even low volumes. They're just like your mates mad sik Commodore with cut springs; they haven't got the travel before it bottoms out!

ha ha - same reason mine have been forked for so long, can't really justify spending hundreds of dollars on decent speakers.

You can get foam surround replacements for about $5 a pop.  Job is not too hard, a bit fiddly. But you still end up with OEM speakers (I don't know if that's a good or bad thing).

Keep your eye out at jb, they often have 30% off car sound
I've always used kicker speakers, probably get 2 sets of 6" for around the $100 mark
And that's for the mid market black and yellow ones (the grey competition ones are a bit more expensive naturally)

You don't need to spend big money on speakers if you're running a stock setup, really any aftermarket speaker is going to sound 100x better than standard, but kicker is a good price for a good speaker so I've always stuck with them

I replaced my front speakers with Clarion's and still have a vibration in the passenger door. Only goes away when I push on the door trim. I've tried most things. Gave up and just turn it down now or ignore it. The surrounds had gone bad on the fronts. Checked the rears and they were fine, so left them.
