might be a bit late, but the bugeye o2 sensors are compatible. cables are a bit longer but otherwise no issues. might be a bit cheaper? looks like the last one i got cost $139 USD.

I thought the rear (post cat) sensors were for monitoring the cat only?
Post cat O2 sensors do not usually report the burn to the ECU.
Have you tried a sniff of propane in the intake (upstream of MAF) and see if it drives the front O2 sensor rich?
without the rear o2 sensor fuel usage goes up, so they are definitely involved in fuel trims somewhere. it's also located before the 2nd cat on the ADM B4s, so if it's monitoring a cat it's only the one in the primary down pipe.

FSM says:
- Rear Signal: 0V (ON), 0-0.9 (Idle)
This confirms it's operation for controlling closed loop mixtures.
it should swing from 0.1 to 0.9 and back over a couple of seconds.
if it's slow or at a fixed voltage, it's dead.
when you unplug it, the ECU generally reads about 0.45 volts if you test the ECU pin itself
BOSCH O2 sensors from your local Auto Service Solutions store are equivalent to OEM for quality and longevity
Aswell as being correct cable length and plugs for plug n play fitment (on the model's I've used in the past)

Thanks,
My new Denso front sensor arrived. Got it for $235. A lot cheaper than the $700 or so I got quoted at Bursons. It came in genuine unopened packaging so I think can confidently say it isn't a knock off.
The rear O2 sensor was operating as you described. It sometimes went up to 1.1V but I think that's a valid reading on the sensor's behalf because the car is running so rich.
Will plug in the new front sensor today. Wish me luck.

Fantastic news!
Installed the new front O2 sensor and went for a drive. Immediately felt a difference, less throttle lag. No matter what I tried I couldn't trip up even a pending lean code.
I've attached a new data log if anyone wants to check. It doesn't have everything on it but should be enough to see the difference. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the AF readings look good to me.
Thank you to every who has contributed to helping me solve this problem and for putting up with this lengthy discussion. I owe you guys a beer.
I still have a misfire at idle with a cam shaft sensor code. I'm going to start a new thread for that as this one has had a thrashing.

You know what. On the up side, you fixed a whole lot of other shit that needed attention at the same time!
Once she's on the road and back to normal duties, keep us in the loop and let us know hoe she goes.
Oh, and make a build thread!

well done on finally sorting this out.
Its funny how it usually turns out to be the simple stuff. Its a good maxim to troubleshoot by.
