The Subaru WRX STI has been a staple in the WRX line-up for a long time, and this year it’s back.  With the much-loved and refined boxer engine layout and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive combination, the 2016 WRX STI will make the performance benchmark higher than ever before.  Adding to it a host of new upgrades from the infotainment system down to safety feature enhancements and the result is an uncompromised driving machine.

The classic EJ25 2.5-litre DOHC turbocharged horizontally-opposed boxer engine with Dual Active Valve Control System (DAVCS) drives the 2016 WRX STI.   DAVCS is Subaru’s way of extracting every last bit of power from the engine, and works by changing the timing of the engine valves by adjusting the position of the camshafts via hydraulic actuators controlled by the engine control unit (ECU).  Inputs from a range of sensors help the ECU to calculate the ideal camshaft position, which is then fed through to the actuators to change the camshaft position and give the engine the best performance possible.   This results in 221kW of power at 6,000RPM and a maximum torque of 407Nm at 4000RPM from the EJ25 powerplant.

The WRX STI’s drivetrain is responsible for getting all of that power to the ground through the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive System, matched with a six-speed manual transmission.  It’s partnered with Active Torque Vectoring along with other electronic technologies across the full 2016 WRX STI range that keep you in control without taking away from the driving experience.

The 2015 and 2016 WRX STIs also have noticeable suspension and chassis improvements compared to the previous model WRX STI.  Stiffening plates have been added, along with thicker front control arm plates to increase their torsional rigidity by 40% and bending stiffness by 30%, which minimises the energy loss through the chassis whilst driving.  The front suspension uses stiffer cross-members and control arm bushings, as well as thicker strut cylinders and 39% higher spring rates to give more predictable handling, and helps the 2016 WRX STI achieve its neutrally balanced driving characteristic.

The rear suspension on the 2016 WRX STI is also stiffer, with the rear anti-roll bar increased from 19mm to 20mm as well as 62% higher rear spring rates, along with the addition of rear sub-frame supports to improve torsional rigidity for a high degree of stability and steering response.

Both the 2016 as well as the 2015 WRX STIs feature refined aerodynamics and ergonomics, with the rear spoiler offering both aerodynamic efficiency and excellent rear vision as well as high-mount stop light visibility for vehicles behind you.

At the front, LEDs are used for the low beam headlights with meticulously designed projector lenses and parabolic reflectors giving great light distribution, while the colour temperature of the headlights are almost indistinguishably close to the sun’s colour temperature of 5800K which delivers superior night vision.  Daytime running lights also come as standard to the new WRX STI, which operate automatically and will turn off as soon as the headlights or fog lamps are activated.

Move to the inside of the 2016 WRX STI and you’ll notice the great amount of interior space as well as the great visibility from the driver’s seat.  One of the big changes for 2015 was the repositioning of the A-pillar, which was moved forward 200mm in addition to the side mirrors which were relocated to the door panel.  This has been carried over to the 2016 WRX STI and it allows the inclusion of forward view quarter glass into the front doors, which goes a long way to giving superb visibility, especially in spirited driving where you can see beyond the corner to better judge the best line to take.

In the rear, the cargo space is an impressive 460-litres and leaves you lots of room for your daily luggage.

A big addition to the 2016 WRX STI is the new infotainment screen display.  At 7.0-inches, it lets you see and control everything from Bluetooth® and Pandora® smartphone app connectivity to the satellite navigation and the rear reversing camera.  Dual USB inputs in the front centre console, plus text message readout and reply functionality are also available at your fingertips for the ultimate convenience.  Also included is a Harman Kardon 8-speaker sound system with subwoofer to complete the infotainment package, combining driving and audio performance together.

For the 2016 WRX STI safety is kept at the forefront.  Passive safety features include the ring-shaped passenger safety cell that stiffens the chassis and absorbs impact energy, and seven SRS airbags – front driver and passenger airbags, driver’s knee airbag and curtain airbags – while Subaru’s Vision Assist, an array of active safety features come in the form of Blind Spot Monitors (BSM), Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA), Lane-Change Assist (LCA), High Beam Assist (HBA), Side View Monitor (SVM), and Auto-dimming Rear View Mirror – all included on the WRX STI Premium model.

The Blind Spot Monitors alert you of other vehicles driving in your blind spot, and the Side View Monitor keeps helps you see all around you by displaying the area beside the WRX STI which is normally impossible to see clearly.

We all know how difficult it can be to see other vehicles when reversing out from a car parking space or driveway, which is why Subaru have also included Rear Cross-Traffic Alert to warn you of any oncoming vehicles in this situation.  Lane Change Assist also helps keep the rear of the car covered, as it detects any vehicles rapidly approaching you from behind in adjacent lanes.
