In today’s society, it’s difficult to deny that technology plays a huge role in our lives.  We hold many times more computing power in our pockets now than could fill an entire room only a few decades ago.  Subaru have incorporated the best in modern technology into the latest generation of their cars in a system called EyeSight® Driver Assist System, which is an extra set of eyes on the road. It works much like our own eyes do, using stereo cameras to monitor the surrounding environment in 3D.  It’s our most significant step in collision prevention since we designed Symmetrical All Wheel Drive.

Professional driver Dean Herridge explains the engineering behind EyeSight® in the video below:

EyeSight® is available on a range of Subarus, including the Forester 2.5i-S and 2.0XT Premium, Outback 2.5i, 2.5i Premium and 3.6R Premium, as well as the all-new Liberty range.

Its feature set includes: Brake Light Recognition, Pre-Collision Steering Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Sway Warning, Lead Vehicle Start Alert, Pre-Collision Braking System, Pre-Collision Brake Assist and Pre-Collision Throttle Management.  All of these elements work together to help avoid or reduce the severity of a detected frontal collision.

The Pre-Collision Braking System provides automatic braking intervention in emergency situations to help avoid or alleviate a collision if it detects it , while Pre-Collision Throttle Management detects objects in front that you’re likely to hit and reduces the available engine power to help prevent injury if you accidentally accelerate.

Pre-Collision Steering Assist may also be activated if EyeSight® detects that there is the possibility of a frontal collision with an object and anticipates the driver taking evasive action by quickly steering away from it.  It then alters the dynamics of the car through the Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) System to maintain control and help avoid the obstacle.

Lead Vehicle Start Alert is great when you’re stopped at traffic lights, and lets you know if the traffic ahead has started moving again in order to maintain traffic flow.

A major leap in automotive technology was the introduction of electronic cruise control, but we’ve taken it a step further with Adaptive Cruise Control in the EyeSight® Driver Assist System.  When you’re on the open road and there are lots of other vehicles around you, this is one of the most convenient solutions to have.  The EyeSight® cameras work with the rest of your car to keep a safe distance from the car in front.

When behind the wheel, there are often momentary distractions which divert your attention away from the road.  Lane Departure and Lane Sway Warning helps to protect you when that happens by giving you an audible and visual warning to alert you if you unintentionally stray from your lane.

While not part of the Eyesight® Driver Assist System, Subaru have added some new features into the 2016 Subaru WRX Premium and WRX STI Premium to keep all of the angles covered.  New additions include Subaru’s Vision Assist technologies; Blind Spot Monitors (BSM), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Lane Change Assist (LCA), High Beam Assist (HBA), Side View Monitor (SVM), and Auto-dimming Rear View Mirror, which all help to keep you as safe as possible during your daily duties.

We’ve all been guilty of not checking our blind spots when merging or changing lanes, or even been a victim to it.  The 2016 WRX Premium and WRX STI Premium come equipped with Blind Spot Monitors which alert you to other vehicles driving in your blind spot, and Side View Monitor is a tiny camera in the passenger side view mirror which displays the area beside your car that’s normally impossible to see.

In addition, Rear Cross Traffic Alert warns you of any oncoming vehicles when reversing out of a car parking space, and Lane Change Assist detects vehicles rapidly approaching you from behind in adjacent lanes and warns you with a flashing indicator if there is.

Subaru have always designed to keep the driver in control, and this time is no different.
