Don;t bother,

Save up your money for a single turbo conversion.

A Manual 97 JDM GTB is plug n play with a V3/V4 STi ECU with about 3 minor wiring loom changes
it is the cheapest and easiest conversion to perform

remove twins and exhaust,
block the primary oil and water feeds

bolt on a proper turbo and exhaust
swap over the Y-pipe to the intercooler from a single turbo model
plug in ECU
turn the key

Ive done this mod before. The vf33 primary has a bigger snout and outlet so you have to make a hybrid intake to suit. A vf26/27 combo will drop in with no modifications required.

Why change turbos? Are some better than others?

I've got a weird mix. Stock primary and a VF13 or VF21, whichever is the secondary of the pair. I blew the primary of the pair and had to rebuild the old stock one.

They are mostly similar but the later VF32/33 had a better compressor/turbine spec and was the cream of the crop. There were also changes in turbine housing sizes and design throughout the TT life.

To be honest, I had a whole bunch of mods at the same time running on the stock ECU. I wouldn't recommend it.

As for ECU to the OP, you might have to trawl through Japan auction sites and find a "chipped" one such as a ZeroSports. Usually have a sticker on the ECU.

On the whole, I think the Gen2 GTB ECU is sensitive to mods which is why I kept chewing through engines. I had a full TBE exhaust, full intake and hybrid intake tract, VF32/33, parallel fuel rails and rising rate FPR, lightweight fFidanza flywheel, custom up-pipes and the list went on.

If I could have gone back in time, I would have just replaced the old stuff with OEM equivalents and enjoyed the car in it's factory fit out.

TT's are best enjoyed stock with a bit of an exhaust.
