My car... lets begin

its a green 1999 2.5L Gen 3 Subaru Outback. It has the 5 Speed dual range manual gearbox.

Here are some before pics of my outback on one of my first long distance'ish trips  :D

Here is a picture of how it stands as of 30/3/2017

I've been slowly building up parts and buying things since i bought the car.

The previous owner liked his gadgets and had a dashcam, a battery tester under the bonnet and extra 12v sockets which actually came in handy many times.

I continued this trend as you will find out.

I have Yokahama Geolander All terrains which stick pretty well to the road.

They surprised me when i tried to get it stuck in some mud... My Subaru brumby has more issues with its maxxis mudterrain tyres.

I've mostly done internal work so far just to make it a little more modern.

I have installed four new Alpine S Series speakers because the original clarion speakers were all foam rotted and sounded quite awful.

I also installed a Alpine CDE-W235BT.

When i wanted more low end i did what any p plater would do and bought a 15" Subwoofer.

Specifically i bought a Alpine MRV-M500 Amplifier and a Alpine 15" Type S Subwoofer.

Aaaand yes i know what you are going to say.... "Typical of a p plater to have a ridiculous sub in his car"

You are right it is ridiculous... But i love it haha.

I also have installed a Uniden UHF that i was given from one of my dad's work mates and it was pretty much new because it was rarely used.

I did run a small magnetic antenna but i now have a bigger uhf antenna on my nudge bar.

Here are some photos of my interior:

17

Fits perfectly

18

The old small antenna for the UHF.

19

The nudge bar is from subaxtreme.
I assume i am the last person to ever buy one of these nudge bars because after i received it the company removed the nudgebar and bullbar for the gen 3 outback off the site.

For the lightbar i have used a oem fog light switch and a relay to make it look as stock as possible.

Some comparison pics of the light bar vs my high beams

To unlock the boxer sound i installed some uel headers and had another p plater moment and replaced the stock muffler with a straight pipe from the diff back.
In the end it was way too loud and did not suit the car at all haha
I got a straight through muffler welded on and it actually sounds pretty decent for a outback.

It is not quite stock volume but it is fairly close, i have noticed it getting alittle louder as time goes on though. The UEL headers make it sound awesome.

The car has new shocks and heavy duty lifted springs all round done by pedders suspension.

It has lifted the car another 1" from stock.

I do plan on putting 1" lift blocks later on to finally have the 2" of lift.

All the rubbers were replaced while it was at pedders and it drives amazing now!

good to see an outback getting a bit of soft roading.

That looks suspiciously like the Howes valley / Macdonald river area

Hello again :)

I did it!

I installed the nudge bar!

It was more of a struggle than i thought it was going to be.

But here we go!

First i took the plastic bumper off

20

Then i had to remove the bumper support bar because the brackets go behind that

18

I forgot to take photos of how they attach but once i got that off i put the brackets on and then put the bumper bar back on over the top of it.
Then i put the plastic bumper back on and then hoped i remembered where all the plastic clips went haha.

This is what it looked like after the brackets were installed
22

Once that was all done i attempted to put the nudge bar onto the brackets.
aaand success!

25
23
28

I also test fitted the led light bar too and figured out i may need to make my own bracket so it sits closer to the nudgebar.

27
26

I also found out when i went out later that night that my dad was bored and ran the wires through the firewall for the light bar. So that's one less thing i have to do now
I got an oem fog light switch that i'm going to use for the light bar and i have made a sticker that i'm going to stick on the front of the switch.
I don't need a label because i'll know what it does but its mostly just a looks thing :)

Great fit on the bar! Doesn't look awkward at the bottom where it stops unlike the forester version of the same era

I got bored one night and decided to take my rear muffler off to see what it sounded like.

I was surprised to hear it sounded alright and wasn't that loud, fairly crackly obviously with there being no muffler.

29

30

So my options were:

1. Get a new diff back muffler welded together by my local exhaust shop.

2. Get a straight pipe diff back  welded together by my local exhaust shop.

For the giggles i went with the straight pipe. I will get a muffler in the future because long distance driving will probably kill me but for now i'm having a bit of fun haha.

32

33

It is missing the typical Subaru boxer sound that i hear from many Subaru's in my area.

I have done a bit of reading around and i think it may be time to get a uel header for my car.

So that is my next thing to buy.

Hello,

I have done a few things since i last posted

The first thing was to get a straight through muffler welded on because i was right about it being too droney on long trips.

Then once i got that done i started working on taking my stock headers off.

I failed to take the nuts off the cat and no amount of wd 40 was helping.

Ended up getting it off by grinding away the nut and hammering it.

The easy part was taking the headers off the engine because it had already been off when the previous owner had the engine out.

Then i put on the new Uel headers which was super easy

I'm extremely happy with the sound it makes when driving, it's definitely not loud but has a nice burble which is exactly what i was looking for.

42

Moving forward a couple of weeks i then decided to put my lightbar on properly

I wasn't happy with the way it was sitting when i first put it on so i drove to bunnings and bought a piece of aluminium. I cut and drilled holes to try and lower the lightbar down below the stock mount points on the nudgebar and now it is exactly where i wanted it.

It doesn't shake as much as i thought it would when driving which is what i was worried about because the aluminium is fairly thin.

Next was to run the wiring through the firewall so i could wire in a second subaru foglight switch i bought to make it look stock.

I just used tiny speaker connectors to put on the pins in the back of the switch and i had to bend the pins out so they didn't touch but overall it works so im happy with that.

I printed out a small logo on sticker paper to put onto the switch (not needed but i did it anyway.)

45

I put my suby club sticker on the other day too after putting on my nudgebar :)

49

The next thing on the list is a uhf antenna mount on the nudgebar so i can finally put my antenna on.

But so far this is where i stand with my car

How much more light does that light bar put out matey?

As we all know that the Gen 3 high beams are absolutely woeful.

Nice job of the switch placement too.

Looks good mate.  I love the fact you went for the straight through rear pipe - total P plater move!  Even better is that you decided it was crap like that anyway and went for a set of aftermarket UEL extractors.

What's next?

Cheers

Thanks! :) I had a bit of fun with the straight pipe but in the end it was way too loud and did not suit the car at all haha

The drone was ridiculous i'm usually pretty used to drone from the v8s my parents own but this was a whole new level of drone.

It is near stock volume now with the new muffler on and with the UEL headers it still has a nice sound when i'm really giving it some.

Next thing should be a lift. I'm thinking roughly a 2" lift maybe even less.

I cant take my car as many places as i take the subaru brumby on the farm because of the front of my car hitting every single ditch as i come down some places so i think this might fix that.

I found a picture of what it may look like when i get it done.

I rarely use the high beam now haha. It throws out way more then the high beam for sure.

Next time i'm out i might snap a few pictures of it and post them up here.
